Crank Breather?

Crank Breather?
Never noticed this before, but on the cam cover behind the fuel filter there's a 3/4" tube coming out and pointing back and down, is this the breather? I'm assuming so. I'm thinking maybe that's where all the oil is coming from, not the cover gasket itself. If it is, could I run a line up and put a breather filter on it? No harm in that right? Or would it just spit oil all over my newly painted motor and engine bay?

Yes that is the crankcase port for venting. Your supossed to have a plastic hose running down to the bottom of your rig. you will see ocassionally oil drops from it.you can put a barf bottle on the end to prevent dripping, many do. Just remember to empty it now and again.

So If I route it upwards, with an aftermarket breather on it, what happens? I couldn't imagine it'd do anything but drain back into the motor? can't rotate it can you so that it's pointing up to drain it back into the motor?

When it comes to the crankcase fumes returned to the engine, you need to they are clean. Breather filter will block out all the dirt from the crankcase fumes.

If you HAVE TO go up, put a drainback at the bottom of the P-trap, and let the oil drain from a small orofice there. Then the fumes can go up.
But much better to just put a barf bottle on the bottom, or route to the exhaust.
