Coughing/Sputtering/Popping, & white smoke when it's cold?

Noticed this the last couple days. When I first start my truck in the morning, when I'm driving off, if I get much over 2000 RPM it will start popping and sputtering, and blowing big puffs of white smoke out the exhaust. Everything is fine once it's warmed up though?

I wanna say its par for the course. I get it, and whoever I see reply in a thread about it, theirs does it too. If it did it all the time, Ive heard about slipped timing causing that. 0.02

mine pops and farts to when its cold out side. its annoying but i think adding fuel and timing and such makes it worse than bone stock but i dont see it herting anything. just not hot enough in the head to burn all of it.thats just me though. i am sure most guys on here have this problem.

It sounds like the timing might be retarded.

i got it too when its real cold...make sure ur idle is high enough ...i also start it and depress the pedal to 1000rpms for about 20-30sec and then let off and have my coffee while the windows defrost and let her idle for a couple mins....normal stuff for a mechanical pump diesel

One other thing to check is you puel presure. my lift pump went out once and caused that and also my overflow went out another time and caused it.

Mine runs just fine when cold. A little smoke for maybe a minute, nothing excessive or obnoxious. I never take a cold engine over 1800-2000 rpm's for lubrication reasons. Yes, it has been **** cold here lately, 10 deg!!! You snow lovers can have the cold. Give me warmth and sunshine!!!!
The trick to low smoke and good cold starts is advance your timing. It also eliminates the higher rpm sputter with high smoke too. Try it, you'll like it!!!

Replace your overflow valve.

Not sure what the overflow valve is, I'll have to look it up. Not sure how to check the timing on this, there's no #1 plug wire. Have to look that one up too.

I need to swap out the fuel filter too.

My truck also pops and sputters and white smokes like crazy in the cold mornings, but it is pretty bad at any RPM over idle which is 725. I replaced my overflow valve after reading several post on this problem and it did not help my truck any at all. Now I am going to change my lift pump, and then check fuel lines and have timing adjusted (probably needs it after 202,000 miles). just my .02 cents.

Are you sure your grid heater is working? Mine wasn't and thats kinda what it did until I fixed it. Does your wait to start light make you wait for a while, and then after start dose your volt/amp meter fluctuate for a while, then your grids are working.
