Cold weather starting
Hey guys, the truck in my sig. has always started great in the winter but after having a marine HG, ARP studs, and 4K GSK it really starts hard when it's cold and even surges some when it does start. The idle speed is the same as it has always been and these are the only changes from last winter. Any ideas? Would the addition of the 20 over gasket lower the compression to the point of hard starting or is the GSK kit doing something funky to the pump? It doesn't matter if you hold the peddle down or not it doesn't start until you crank quite a bit but it does hit and quit. Thanks.

Does it also have hard starting when the engine is warm? What about after sitting a while but the engine is still warm? Possibly your fuel supply and overflow hoses are old and porous, allowing air into your injector pump.
2. A perforated diaphram in your mechanical lift pump would cause poor fuel pressure during starting but might still have adequate pressure for normal speed running.

Does it not start unless you give it a little pedal? If this is so, you could try backing your governor springs off 1 click and raising the idle with the adjuster screw. I was told when I bought my .010 over HG that it might have a very small affect on cold starting but wouldn't be a problem. Try priming it before you start it once and see if that helps at all.

cant see how the starting would get harder unless the timing was slipped as well, when u get the truck started, how is it on power?

Sorry for the delay guys I've been away from the computer. At 40 degrees it starts like when new, but at 25 it cranks hits on a cylinder or two then dies. Add throttle and it will hit and kick the starter out then die. I have noticed that when (at warmer temps) the idle will dip when you let off the pedal then surge back to about 850 rpm. This is something that never happened before the GSK kit.
