Cold weather noises

since the cold weather has started i've noticed that when my truck is good 'n cold (sitting out all night temps in the teens) the next morning the power steering and the brakes will "grunt" when i turn the wheels or press the brakes. also when i let the rpms fall back to idle i hear the same noise as they cross 1200-1400 mark on the way down. after i drive it a while and it gets warmed up this will quit. i dont think that is normal, my 95 never did it and it had gotten just as cold. anybody else experienced this? i guess i'll change the fluids and see if that does anything for it. thanks guys

When changing fluid add a bottle of Lube-Gard power steering treatment and your problem will vanish. You probably don't even need to change the fluid, just suck out an equal amount of fluid to the Lube-Gard and dump the bottle in.
Most autoparts carry Lube-Gard

Mainer,

Do you get the grunt noise when you step on the brake pedel also. My 99 24v PS has been gunting the last couple of cold days and now I'm getting a moan from the brakes. Noticed a puddle yesterday after I shut it down. Looked like it was under the PS pump but a check showed no real loss of fluid. This morning PS almost impossible to turn and breaks went to the floor until the beast warmed up. What do you think Infidel????

I'm gonna change the fluid today. Haven't hit the parts store yet but right now it's a toss up between sythetic and reg ATF with the Lube guard additive. Got to see what good old Advance auto has in stock. Hopefully this will make the difference. I read a few other posts where guys change the fluid regularly.

Just changed out the fluid. Use Valvaline sythethic ps fluid. Advance auto didnt' have the Lube Guard and I got the last quart of the synthetic stuff. Steering and Brakes a-ok and no grunt. We'll see tommorrow cause it's supposed to get down to 5 degrees. I would suggest if you go with the additive to change the fluid anyway cause mine looked like my motor oil looks after a change. Turkey baster works well to suck out the old crap.

Valvoline PS isn't synthetic (read the fine print on the label) but it does work very well. Lubegard works even better.
Always a good idea to flush a system with a number of years on it.

On a recent PS thread a guy had a noisy system and it turned out to be a cracked return line letting air into the system
