Clutch or Tranny?

So i as i was driving down the service road today, i hit the gas to get on the highway, not getting into boost or getting on it hard and all of a sudden out of nowhere 5th gear just lets loose, so i let out of the gas and try applying the gas slower to see if its the clutch slipping but still nothing at all. So i coast the truck down to 50 and put it in 4th, slowly let out the clutch and still nothing at all. Same way with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Any gear i put the transmission in i get nothing but a faint grinding noise. Now at idle i can put the transmission in any gear like normal. So does this sound like the tranny or the clutch took a dump on me? Does anyone know a good shop in houston, tx where i could take my truck to get looked at?

input shaft is broken? Standard transmissions in Ft Worth. And get the updated main shaft to solve your fith gear saga, and might as well get a southbend clutch and maybe even new input and output shafts. By your post I assume you have a 5speed.Goodluck,,Rick

You could have lost the clutch disk...that would produce the same effect as the input shaft twisting. In any event, you'll have to tear into the 'ol girl to get it figured out....any chance the t-case coulda slipped into neutral?

BTW, Welcome to DTR!

Clutch disc, I bet the center is broke. Look at my "boy this clutch is GONE" post in the 12 valve drivetrain froums.

Yes i have a south bend clutch. Tranny was rebuilt 6 months ago at Standard transmission and is not making any noises that would lead me to believe the input shaft broke. The tranny has the upgraded mainshaft and fully splined input shaft. The clutch was a South Bend OFE, but not sure how long its been on the truck.

You might want to fill in your signature, so that other members can easily see what your truck is.

Let us know when you tear it down, what happened.

Well i ended up taking the truck to DI performance. Very pleased with the work, and turn around time. Turns out that the clutch that was in the truck was a LUK. The flywheel side of the clutch disk was a nice smooth metal surface with not a bit of friction material left. Got the new 13" FE clutch in and everything is back running good. Just waiting for the break in so i can get on it again
