Changing the oil pan gasket?

Changing the oil pan gasket?
When changing the oil pan gasket what all do you have to do to get the pan above the cross member? Do you just disconnect the Motor Mounts and tranny mount and start jacking it up with a jack?

-Drain enough water from the truck to remove the top radiator hose from the radiator.
-Loosen and remove the 2 motor mount bolts.
-Use a engine hoist to lift the front of the motor high enough using the front lift mount to remove all the bolts from the pan and drop the pan.
-Be careful with your clean up and make sure all of the old hardened gasket is off of the blocks oil pan rail.
Thats a short version of what EEP did when they installed my chromed oil pan recently and fixed a old hardened and leaking bad oil pan gasket.Paitence is a vortue when you do it and you may have to become Gumby when you work on it.Take your time and you will be alright........Andy

thats a job
I was under my truck last night changing the manual trans oil, and noticed all those bolts holding the oil pan on. I was thinking it was good I wasn't trying to remove that tonight. A powered ratchet would be nice for that job...as well as the engine hoist....and all that other stuff.

If you jack the motor up, can you leave the tranny in, and get the pan off?
I also forgot that they loosened the tranny mount when they did it.Yes,its quite a job and not one for the novice mechanic.I wish I would have put some thought into the chrome oil pan, what a PIA to clean and polish.....Andy

seeing as how you are in the northeast salt country, I would definately change the pan and the gasket if you go through all that trouble.
I had to change my pan 2 years ago due to rusting through.

If you are changing it because of oil leakage you might try this first. Lots easier and it worked for me. Clean the pan mounting area as much as you can. Remove two or three bolts at a time and clean both the bolts and the holes they go into thoroughly with brake cleaner. Apply a coating of black silicone sealer to the bolts and reinstall. Do this to all the bolts and let the sealer set up overnight before starting the engine.

We rebuilt a wrecked 01 several years ago. The front axle came back and poked a hole in the pan. I got elected to change it. Boss said you have to "pull the tranny, and it comes right out". Yeah Right. After removing everything from the bellhousing adapter back, I still couldn't get the pan off without removing the pickup tube. Oh well, got to oogle over the entire driveline, it only had like 10K on it.I wish I knew about this place back then.
