Infidel is correct; all 12 valves from January 1994 til the last 98 12v had cats, it did not matter if it was a cali truck or not.
I don't know what Kas83 and that part of Wisconson have going on as I have never seen non-cat stickers ever installed from the factory, but I have worked on trucks from all over the country, and they all originally had cats.

Emissions testing is different everywhere, many areas don't test at all.
Here in Washington, the urban ares only do a tailpipe test as you romp the throttle, there is no visual component inspection. But the outlying areas don't test, even though those people commute to the city. Lame!
I know in Colorado they do visual inspections.

My 97 came from Texas. I don't know what to say about it, I will get a pic of the sticker when I get home. Of the three diesels I've owned, I've never had one with a cat on it. Two were IDI Ford's though.

All the 12 valves I have ever been around had or should have had one. My 98 had one, my dad's new 1996 had one, my 97 work truck had one.

Cats tend to start clogging around 80k, removing it helps. Muffler is your choice, many are availible that flow as well as a straight pipe without the extra noise.

When I removed my cat at 180k miles, it didn't seem clogged. I could still see through it and after I removed it, the exhaust fumes were way stinkier. I guess that indicates the cat was still working. I didn't notice a difference in performance either.

Yeah, I have always believe that all 94.5-98.5 12v's came with cats, regardless of state. I would like to see that some didn't come with them. When I drive in the city I worry that a cop might pull me over for having too loud of an exhaust then write me up for not having a cat.

when you cut it off, SAVE IT, they are over a thousand dollars to buy from the factory if you ever need to put it back on to pass an e test...

Yeah, that's exactly how mine looks. And yes, I would have one on for piece of mind except the cheapest 5" cat I found was about $350!!
