My carrier bearing is making noise. The original with the truck went bad at about 70,000 when the rubber separated and the bearing was floating. When I changed it at the time it was a dealer only item. Now this one is making noise which sounds like it is dry. I have found it on Napaonline for $92.00 but I have found Several on autozone but not pix so I don't know for sure that they are correct but their prices are from $15.00 to $36.00. That is a huge price difference between Napa and Autozone. I am still working in the country of Panama so I am limited to buying on line. Anyone know if the ones listed in Autozone are correct? Joe I can't tell you for sure if it will fit. I called my local Autozone and asked them for the part that you need. They had one in stock part# HB88107A for $18.99. I hope this helps you.

 

Be carefull. I ordered one from NAPA and when it came in it was the wrong one. I ended up calling a dealer to order the part. He insisted on my VIN number to order the correct part. Maybe you can check with a dealer online dealer to order the correct one. I remember seeing someone post the website of a dealer that sells online. Maybe someone can post it again.

This was for my 1995 so it might be different for your truck.

 

Is your truck a QC long bed? I can get my friend at NAPA to get me a part number , the price won't do you much good since i am in canada.

 

Dealer only for 98.....I went through a couple days sidelined out on the road after a few places claimed they carried it, but 98 is different, or rather my 3500 is. In the end I was told that 98 has a special carrier bearing and it is larger, doesnt show up in napa or autozone books, only the dealer. I dont know if its true completely but I saw a couple wrong ones that were listed for 98.

 

So has anyone come up with the proper part number/source for the carrier bearing on a 98 3500 QC? I need to do mine and would like to save myself the hassle of ordering the wrong part...

Any options for an upgrade in this area? I always love improving where I can...

 

I got one through a "spring" shop in Brockton, MA, bearing and housing for I think like $50? It was the ONLY place around that had the right one. This was a few months back, I don't recall the manufacturer. I'd give them a call, place called Woodward Spring on N. Montello st. in Brockton, MA. They aren't typical parts counter boys, so they should be able to hook you up with part numbers- so far they have been able to find anything autozone or napa etc. can't get. Good luck.

 

I have some howling noise that sounds like it is coming from the back of my truck. How can you tell if it is the hanger bearing?

what is the BOM # on your axle?
get that number and call Randys ring & pinion, they should be able to provide you with part numbers or the bearings

Well after some research I have found out that from 1994 they stopped listing diesel carrier bearings and only for gassers. The part number that most places have is the one for the gasser. I did buy the one from Napa that was listed for our truck. For some reason after markets were not making the carrier bearings for the diesel dodge trucks. The part number listed in the above post was available here in Panama and is for the gasser. The difference is the gasser has mounting holes (ears on the left and right of the top (flat end) where the mounting bolts go through. On ours there are no ears and the flat portion is quite a bit thicker and the bolts thread right into the carrier bearing assembly. That makes them $60.00 to $80.00 more expensive.

Bottom line is ask them if it lists it for a diesel, if it says gas but does not say diesel or if it says for all trucks it is not for your diesel (1994 and forward). The napa part number is correct. PN: BRGHB165010 $91.49. Every place else that I called or got on thier web site came up with the wrong one. They all were listing the same bearing and part number. Napa has the pix so you can confirm it with yours.

I talked to a local tranny shop and they told me that they had taken the old bearing out of the housing on the dodge and put an aftermarket one into it. That way it would bolt right back up to the truck. They gave me this part #BCA HB88508A.

 

What was the bearing cost and the labor to change the bearing only in the housing? I have fixed quite a few things in that manner but time, cost, and availability are all factors in deciding wether or not to repair/modify or shell out for the new one.
