Question camshaft end play?

got a 12 valve engine, and checked the end play on the cam and I am getting .060. the book says it shouldnt have any more than .010
the cam lobes and bearing journals all measure good but the end play is too much. how am i getting so much endplay?

There's a couple of possiblities. Either the cam, the cam retainer or the back of the cam is worn that much or the cam gear has moved.

I'll put money on the cam gear walking slightly.

A lot of times on p-pump trucks, the gear will get pushed off the end of the cam a bit, especially if you have a GSK in it. You can check that by seeing if the gear is touching the cam on the backside. Of course like earlier posted the retainer and or the two surfaces it touches can be worn as well. If not addressed you could damage the front cover and the rear plug in the cam bore.

Goodluck
