California emissions capped off
Hey Guys-
I have just bought a 97 Dodge 2500 4x4 from california- it had a crossover tube that led from the exhaust manifold back over the engine and fed back into the intake manifold. I suppose that this was for the smog problems that they have out there. I took off the tube and capped it off on both sides. Now I am getting a check engine light - is this going to be something that I should be concerned with??

The CEL is caused by the lack of temperature change found by the IAT when the computer orders the EGR to open. It won't create any problems for the light to be on but there is a fix if you want to do it. It entails a relay and resistors to fool the PCM. Removing the bulb prevents letting you know if other problems set off the CEL.

What's your mpg right now? In stock form I doubt there is any difference. I can see how your power and mileage would be affected if you start adding power though.

Actually, removing the EGR tube by itself will likely have little afffect on either power or mileage. I blocked off mine on my '98 because it bled off pressure from the exhaust brake, reducing it's effectiveness. The CA stock intake manifold is pretty restrictive where the EGR tube attaches and either a "49 state" version or aftermarket one would help it breathe.

Is there a way to get rid of all the associated vaccum lines ETC that are on the intake plenum? My buddies truck is a cali and already blocked, now just want to get rid of that extra clutter.

Once the tube is capped off and the resultant CELs are taken care of, I guess you could track down the vacuum source to the EGR control and cap it off. Then the control valve and related tubing could be removed. I'm just making an educated guess now since I sold the '98 and don't have it to look at. I kept everything in place on mine so I could return it to stock in case the smog police wanted to inspect it.

You're right. They haven't started inspections yet. However they do opacity tests on commercial vehicles and some folks have been lobbying to start routine inspections on diesel pickups.
Both CA and Fed laws prohibit modifying any vehicle by altering smog equipment. Lots easier to restore back to stock if all the pieces are still in place, even if disconnected.

The intake horn has a venturi cast into it.This should be changed out to get any benefit to eliminating the EGR otherwise you are wasting your time. The 96 does not trip the light but will set the code the 97-98 do both.

we swapped out horns and removed all the vaccum crap on my buddies 98 yesterday, Here are some pics!
it was already blocked off but not soon enough by the looks of the intake above.
