Bought a '98

Well, I am part of the 98 CTD club- and going to sell my ol' 93- they are both dually's. It is a 12valve- and I understand these are the better motors- correct? So what is the consensus on the best parts to make this thing tweak up a bit? How are the tranny's on these trucks- it is an auto.

i think the dodge tranny sucks between me and my brother we've lost 4 trannys gas and diesel all under a 100000 miles. i heard they r great if you upgrade the t/c and v/b. i currently own an auto and plan on upgrading. as far as power nothing beats our trucks. heres what alot of the guys run in their trucks for a little bit of power. correct me if im wrong guys.
1)fix kdp (killer dow pin)
2)exhaust
3)air intake
4)gauges
(dont need the gauges until you add fuel enhancements)
5)get timing advanced (most set it to 16.5*)
6)#10 fuel plate
7)370 injectors and delivery valves
8)3 gsk govenor
9)t/c and v/b
buy them in that order

the kdp is a dow pin in the in the timing gear case it holds the case onto the engine block. do a search on kdp and you'll find alot of post where the pin has fell out into the timing gears.you can either tab it it connects onto a screw in the case and just blocks the pin. it is only 50 dollars from tst but you have to remove the fan shroud, fan and timing gear case. thats what i did but its a pain in the *** to do. the other way is to buy a jig kit im not sure on the price but it is worth the trouble. all you have to do is drill a hole in the case and put a screw in it to block it.just do a search and youll find all you need to know.

by the way the 98 is the best 12v you can buy good choice.and with those mods you wont beleive the power youll have.

its not to bad of a job to do if you have a saturday or something do do it.its just alot of work to get into the timing case just to put a peice of metal over a pin it is pretty eays to do just time consuming. it could never fall out,but personaly i like the assurance that it will never fall out.id do it yourself

My brother is a licensed Cummins mechanic, and in fact, the crew chief on my race car and probably the best mechanic on the planet LOL- but I only ask when completely neccesary- so it sounds like this is one of those times LOL

I have never done more than adjust valves and change oil on my diesal- so diesals are really new to me- have rebuilt hundreds of different race motors- but they all had distributors LOL

there if a way to get more power for free also.you can adjust the starwheel inside the injector pump if you crank it all the way toward the front of the truck you will get some blacksmoke.also if you slide the afc housing foward you get more power. check out www.tstproducts.com they have the directions for doing it or just buy one of their fuel plates.

Well, I have wrote out my plan for my 98- and it is appearance mods first LOL- it has some paint chips and mild body damage that needs work- so it is getting rhino lining on the bed and beltline down (in black) and painted viper red on the beltline up, including the canopy I have for it- and I am powder coating the rims black- and the bumpers as well. So- no chrome- all black and red- just like my race car and motorcycle.

After that- then I am probably going to replace the tranny with something pretty strong- I will stay on this board alot and find out the best tranny options. I will have the exterior done by winter- then during the winter will change the tranny. Only after that will I do engine upgrades.
