the white/blue smoke should only be there for a couple seconds on warm up.

If it will not rev past 2250 with the blue/white smoke usually is the tell tail sign of air in the system.

I thought these enignes defuel around 2250? I don't think mine will rev much past that. On the other CTD I had I put a free GSW shim on it and it would only rev to about 2800. I had the resonator/cat on it so it never did smoke much.

Mine revs good to about 2600... haven't really pushed it much to find out... It usually has all the power I need by 2100 rpms...

yes the truck drived normal you would never know untill you really get on it past 2100 rpm....but i just found out that my dad had dumped the remaining bottle of fuel additive so the fuel wont gel and its an injector cleaner in the other day and didnt tell me, so i think that theres to much of that in there and not enough fuel, what should i do? burn off the rest of my 1/2 tank or fill it up to equalize it better

fill it up, or drain it if your concerned, but filling it up will dilute it.

Also timing could have slipped, but a way to find out for sure if it is fuel related is to check your fuel pressure. If it's low crimp the return line (with gauge connected). If it jumps up high at that moment, it is your overflow valve. If it stays the same, then it's your lift pump or a fuel restriction.

I don't think to much anti-gel would be a problem or cause what your describing.

Another area that is prone to leaks is the connection point of the fuel lines at the tank. Kind of hard to get a good look at them. They use plastic hose from the tank to the steel lines on the frame. KD

My truck had that problem not reving past 1800rpm and putting out enough white smoke to fog the neighborhood and missed real bad. It was after putting in big injectors and the timeing wasnt advanced far enough. After bumping the timeing it revs to 2800 now when cold befor it poops out. With the old injectors it went to 3400 no problems and bone stock both trucks hit 3000 no problems. Anyway. What I found out was apprently the timeing can slip when you floor it once in a while. perhaps that happened? just another peice of thought there.

Digital Bullet,my truck does the same as yours. I get the same coloured smoke when it first starts or when it idles for a while.I hope its normal. My truck is a 98 with 170000 miles on it.PDR set my timing at 15.5,Maybe could this be the sign of a bad injector?

did i mention my 12 valve has 48,000 miles on it....you think a lift pump would be on its way out already?

check for air, regardless of the miles. those fuel lines dry rot and crack like you wouldn't believe. They will leak in air before they leak out fuel.

Oh, and don't sweat the fuel additives. That will not cause anything like you are describing. You will need the additives next winter.

alrite, im going to check the lines starting at the tank, about 6 months ago I had the sending unit out of the tank because it quit working, but I will check for leaks. The truck runs great under 2100rpm you would never know a thing was wrong its only if you punch it and let it rev which i never do thats why i just noticed it yesterday messing around. im praying its not a pump

ok i found the problem. I was flipping through my shop book and i was reading that if the fuel heater has failed then it will build up a wax in the fuel filter. So i went out with a meter and checked the fuel heater and its burnt up and no longer works. So i will need a new one and replace the fuel filter and im good to go. In the book it says that this will cause exsessive white smoke while revving and poor power. I now just have to order parts from dodge.

Dodge sells the whole heater only. Go to a Cummins dealer and buy the element. You'll spend less than 1/2 of the cost of a complete unit. You may also need a new wiring harness as these tend to burn up. It's available at Cummins as well. Oh, and the pins tend to suck air after you unplug the connector.

I've heard that dripping deisel fuel on the wiring harness when changing fuel filters causes the harness to burn up. I don't know how true it is but these harnesses burning up is a very common problem.
