Best Trans Rebuild Kit for '97 12v 4x4 auto - what model is this trans, etc.?
Hey guys,
I am new to the forum so if you have any advice on this, that would be great.
I need to rebuild the trans in my new-to-me '97 12v Auto 4x4. From some research I've done I think it is the A618 47RE, however I've also see 47RH...
What trans does my truck have and what is the difference between the two?
Also, what is the best Trans Rebuild Kit for this trans?
I am having a trans specialist rebuild it, but I want to supply him with the best parts, but have NO CLUE where to look as I am new to Dodge trucks.
I do not need anything that will handle serious horsepower - maybe a fuel plate and cold air intake down the road... I don't plan on tweeking it too much, and will only haul occasionally. At the most I would have on it would be 10,000lbs. - and that is at the VERY most. Normally only the weight of a car and trailer, and that is only occasionaly. It will mostly be used as a work truck for wood, building/home supplies, motorycle, snowmobile hauling.
In other words, I don't need any serious power trans rebuild kit. Reliability and fuel mileage is what I am looking for (then again, arn't we all!)
Any help would be appreciated on where to go for the trans rebuild kit.
Thank you.

Your Trans is a 47re. If reliability is a main concern then building the tranny like you were planning to add power would be smart. I know you said you only minor changes are planned but build it right and you will only have to do it once. It only takes minor upgrades to over power a stock trans.

You I am looking at needing some trans work also , so I've been looking for some time , its working now so I have time to look .
From what I have gathered , is the trans in these trucks is marginal for the diesel , meaning that they were not intended to work with the torque of the diesel , so if you are going to get your trans done , they should know what is required for this trans eng combination , if they do not then find a different builder , when I had my shop I worked only with parts & suppliers I knew , and would not put in what I would not recomend .
There are shops out there that specialize in the auto in these trucks , the one I have chosen is Goerend trans ,
http://www.goerend.com/
The only issue is a good trans costs more , I would have one by now , but work has been slow for some time , a trans & TQ can cost easy $3,500 + install , but doing a standard trans twice or more can cost a lot more .
