best brakes ever

I recently swapped out the factory dana 80 out of my truck for a 2002 disk brake axle. The changeout went very well, everything bolted right up, and the stopping power of the brakes is awesome. Don't know if any one else has done this, but it is definately a good upgrade.

Did you change the master cylinder or any proportioning/residual pressure valves?

I just don't see how the master cylinder will work with a disc/disc setup, when it was designed for a disc/drum setup without a combination valve or residual pressure valve to adjust the difference in front/rear disc pressure. Hmmm...have to do some research. Very cool to know though, I'd like to swap a disc brake rear in my '94.

Ok......I HAVE to do this. I hate my rear drums.

Can you give any other details that would be helpful? Did you take pics? What did you end up having to give for the 2002 rear end?

Everything bolted right up. The width from wheel surface to wheel surface was bout 3" wider than the '98 cab&chassi. But i took the duals off and am running 285/75r16's all the way round, have no need for duals anymore since i don't haul anything more than 16' gooseneck. But i have'nt checked if the old 80 would accept the disk's rotors. I give 550 bucks for the unit. It was a cab & chassis out a two wheel drive 2002.

I know for a fact that summit and jegs both offer a drum to disk conversion kit fairly reasonable. We do it to rock rigs all the time here. they offer it in Dana 60, 70, & 80 ! Spicer off road offers a really nice kit also .

I did a conversion on the front of my 68 dart, got the discs out of a 71 or 73 duster. never changed anything else, used the same old master and proportioning valve, the result was just awesome brakes,I guess my point is I swapped from a drum/drum setup to a disc/drum no prob

Just as another point here, when GM changed the rear brakes in 1994 on the Police 9C1 Caprice they retained the proportioning valve from the drum setup.

Those brakes were very good, some guys made them slightly better by adapting the proportioning valve to disc use.

The key is rear brakes are but a small ( 25 percent ) portion of the whole system, and you can get by with more.
