Smile automatic to manual???

Hello all,

first post. seeing alot of autos out there but I really want a manual. What would it take to convert an auto to a manual.. Is it recommended? How much do you think it would cost.

thanks for your input

I would try to keep looking for a manual, but if not, I'm doing the conversion too. If you search you will find posts where quite a few have done it. I plan on doing it myself. But it will probably be a couple grand to do it. I waited until I found someone taking out everything so I could get it all in one place and know I have everything. Otherwise you can check ebay, parts for this conversion are on there a lot. There's just something about a manual!

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Hold off buying till find what want. May have to go a little futher in looking. you must have a donor truck locked in to have source for all components. For me, there always seems to be something forgetten, different, or just plain won't work right. Also your investment in truck has risen considerable in the process.

keep looking. I wanted a manual, but couldn't find one with a decent body. I got impatient and went with the next low mileage auto I could find with a good body. I now have an nv4500 in that truck. I spent an ungodly amount of money on the conversion, mainly due to me buying close to everything NEW and going from the 241dld to the dhd.

i was in the same boat, i really wanted a 5-speed but got antsy and bought an auto. i didnt really like it from the get-go so i rounded up parts for a swap. i bought "almost" everything from a guy who had compiled the parts for his own project and then got cold feet. "almost" meaning that there were only half a dozen or so components missing, most of which were rather obscure and hard to obtain individually. i would highly advise gaining access to a complete parts truck to avoid the hassle of trying to track down the odds and ends that arent included in that "everything you need" deal.

all said and done i have about $2800 in mine, including the nv4500 with upgraded main shaft and 1 3/8" input. when its back on the road and you are shifting your own gears it will become worth every cut, bruise, penny, and headache that you went through to source all the parts.

OR you can bide your time and hope to find a factory 5 speed....but that isnt nearly as fun and you dont get the pleasure of ridding a cummins from a slushbox.....

It took me over a year to find my truck (with a 5 speed of course). I almost bought an auto a couple times, but it was worth the wait. Just be patient and you'll find one

I converted mine. Have 4k into it by the time i had new driveshafts made, trans case input swaped, bolts ect. But i bought it from a guy who swapped out a manual to an auto. I had everything including a 1 3/8 shaft and an almost brand new sb dual disk 3600. If you have all the parts it could be done in a weekend however the chance of having everythign is pretty slim somethign will come up that you cant get

just did mine this evening my son and I put my truck on the lift at 5:00 pm and drove it out of the garage at 9:00pm got some more wires to rehook when I installed my gauges years ago I thought it was a good spot to run the wires in the grommet where the slave cyl goes, need to change out the steering colum yet but it is driveable the way it is with the auto wheel in it. I bought a complete truck to do the swap so I had everything laying there on the floor. Now just need to get my auto sold. It is one of the easiest auto to manual swaps I have done.
