Auto trans techniques

Anyone care to share techniques you use to shift where you want with the auto? Seems like im always too low or high in gear and never making the best use of the trans. like how do you load the motor enough to develop boost at low speeds? Id imagine you can ride the brakes but that sounds harsh.

The most important thing you can do is lock out OD under 55 mph.
Otherwise just let the tranny decide where it wants to be, rpms make little difference in mpgs.

Have you tried moving the shift lever while watching the tachometer and boost gauge?

So if youre trying to get maximum power, you try to use the shifter to keep the trans in gear until its ready for the sweet spot in the next gear? doesnt harm anything doing that does it?
Seems like I never have power when I need it.. was wondering how you create a load to spin up the turbo. In drag racing it looks like they do left foot brake launches.

I tried that the other day and lit up the tires something nasty then the engine went right to the redline and stayed there. The truck fell flat on it's face until the tranny finally decided to shift then I thought the hit from the shift was going to blow out a driveline or rearend it hit pretty hard and chirped the tires again.

I had some outfit out of spokane rebuild my tranny and told them to make it bullet proof. They put some highend stuff in and a shift kit. The OD locks out at 45 mph now, and it locks in hard it'll throw your head back a bit when it locks if your climbing a hill or something when it locks.

I think 3k gov springs are in order and I'll see how the tranny handles that. The truck is defueling so much after 2500 ish rpm I loose all performace.

Well, yes, doesn't everybody? Not with an empty truck, you don't need the power, but with a load when you want to operate in the power band I use the shift lever like a shift lever. I don't see how it would harm anything, it certainly won't hurt my ATS. If you're racing I don't have any advice, but for normal hauling just don't go crazy, you will learn where to shift and when to lift your foot so the shifts don't bang too hard. Don't break it.

Ya, Greasy, it helps to go up near 3000 sometimes when you're climbing a mountain pulling something.
