Auto Tranny Questions

My tranny started to act goofy. Sometimes it won't go into overdrive, sometimes when I have been driving and slow down I lose OD. Sometimes when I push the button for OD nothing happens (light stays off). Sometimes if I have OD shut off it seems like it is trying to start out in 3rd gear. If I shut the key off and start it right away it will be back to normal for a while. Does anybody know what part of the electronics I should look at? Would this be something I need to discuss with Bill K.? Keep in mind that I don't have a garage to work in (yet) so I need specifis directions. Today the temp is supposed to get up to 18*.
Tom

I know you've had 20 plus hits on this topic with no replies, but I hope you get someone to pipe up soon. I like to watch the posts regarding transmissions so I can pick up on the troubleshooting of the problems we have with these things.

Re:Auto Tranny Questions

The tranny's are tough ones. The automatics all seem to suffer from to much motor and not enough tranny. There are a 1000 different things that can be wrong. But it is very often a bad torque converter, and main body valve. Personally, having had more than one tranny repaired, I'd get it diagnosed, and then get the parts from TST to put it right.

Those guys have the knowledge and seem to understand the problem. Cost wise it should be about the same. You will still have to pay a tranny shop to do the work. YOu just provide the parts.

My two cents. ;D

It could be the TSP...its a free fix try to clean the contacts or maybe go thru the troubleshooting for the TPS

http://www.dodge-diesel.org/faq/faq....p;onlynewfaq=1

Cant remember if the 96 still has the tranny temp sender in the cooler line but this gave me alot of troubles too untill I changed it

Re:Auto Tranny Questions

I called Bill K. today and he said that there is definately some electrical problems. Atleast he thinks so because of the symptoms and how they started about the same time. He said to start with the simple things and go from there. Could be corrosion in a connecter or a bad O/D solenoid or even a bad PCM. All things concidered he figures that I may be getting to the end of the life for my tranny. He won't sell me a tranny UNTIL I fix the electrical problems first.

Mine was acting like that too until I cleaned the tps and it's contacts, then reassempled with dielectric grease.

The TPS sends the signal to the tranny that tells it when to shift and when they get dirty they will cause you problems.
