auto and manual starter = the same?

I am wondering if the starters are tranny specific?
Any one know off hand.
Thanks,
Oliver

The places that sell starters online make no distinction between auto and manual, just years so I would assume they are the same.

Whatever you do just make sure to get an OEM, the generic auto parts starters were designed for gassers and rarely last more than a year on a diesel.

Oliver, they are the same.

I had to replace both my Auto and Manual, same Starter.

I sold my buddy a 5-speed swap "kit" for his '95 cummins that used to be an auto last winter.
He loves it, but I remember him saying something about a spacer that South Bend sent him with his double disk clutch and flywheel so he could re-use his auto starter.
Maybe it was the D.D. clutch that made him need the starter spacer?
I have a guy local that needs a starter for his auto Cummins and I wanted to make sure my 5-speed starter would bolt right in for him.
I try not call up the local NAPA just to cross reference parts I am selling.....

Thanks Patdaly

The spacer is required because on the 13" clutches and dual discs, the ring gear is more forward on the flywheel than on the 12.25" clutch and auto flexplates.

That is what I was starting to guess, after Bill and Patdaly said they where the same starter.
Thanks,
Tate
