Is there anyway to tell if the KDP has been done on a used truck. If it has been jigged I should be able to tell, right? If it has been tabbed is there anyway to tell? Also if the dowel pin did come loose, can you see the crack on the cover just by opening the hood and looking?
Looking at a 97 ext. cab 4x4 longbed with 150,000 at a dealer. Has exhaust, 3 gauge pillar, they dont know if the trans has been worked on.
Is there anyway to tell if the trans is worn or been rebuilt? Can you tell if it has a different convertor in it by the way it shifts?
This will be my first diesel, and I am set on a 1996-1998 12 valve. I have a good buddy who has a 97 12 valve that he has had for about 7-8 years.

you probably would not see the crack, you would see the oil leak however. the only thing I can think of is looking for permatex gasket material around the front cover. the TST kit comes with a tube of grey. other than that if they used a factory gasket or reused the old gasket you are really not going to be able to tell whithout tearing into it.
as far as the jig, I am not that familiar ( not a big fan of drilling through the front cover). no offense to anyone just personal preferance.
good choice on a 97'. new enough, yet not as complex as the 3rd gen.
best way to tell if the tranny is worn is to drop the pan and look for shavings. this only works if someone hasn't just done a fluid change.
also, with a 97' you should be all set but they did have some of the imfamous "53" blocks with a production date as early as 11-97.

I would always assume the pin hasn't been contained. Even if the paint is chipped off the bolts or new gasket goop is visible it could have been to replace a leaking front seal.
The only way to see if it's been jigged is to remove the fan pulley unit. The containing bolt and the most common place where the case cracks is under the fan pulley and can't be seen without removal.
