it get's below zero here several times a year, last year during the big freeze it was 27* below zero the truck started with dello 15w-40

No problem at all starting with 15w40 when it's below zero.
The worrying part is how long it takes the oil pressure to come up.
I buy my Delo in 55 gallon drums and use a hand barrel pump to dispense it.
When it's below zero it takes about all the strength I have to pump it.
I finally figured out to bring it into the heated part of the shop for the winter.

Thanks for the info on the oil. I found a distributor who will sell me 55 gallons of ci-4+ oil for 800 bucks at my door, more like on the skid steer forks but my question is. Wht is the shelf life of that oil if I keep it closed up when not in use and in a semi heated area? That much oil should last me close to 3 years. I'll buy more if the storage life is good.

I've never heard of oil having an expiration date. As long as you keep it free of contaminates it will be good to use. Oil doesn't spoil haha

Oil in drums has a one year expiration date due to what they call additive fallout.
In other words the additives end up at the bottom of the drum.
This isn't all due to gravity but because the additive that keeps the additives in suspension deteriorates.
The suspension additive is what you smell burning off after an oil change.
I suppose a person could roll the drum around or whatever to mix the additives back in but that seems like a PITA to me.
I overcome the problem by using two drums a year of Delo.
My supplier ships all his unopened expired oil back every winter for free exchange.

I spoke with a good friend of mine about this, he is a MIT grad who works on everything from 20,000RPM turbo CBR929RR's to setting the fuel rack on screaming detroits, he said the new oils should be just fine but if i do waste my money on a additive make sure its a not snake oil- he said these are the "real deal" and protect during zero oil pressure cold starts
