Another used option - '98 12 valve

Ya'll are going to get tired of me before I'm even a 'real' member.

Found a 1998 'Quad Cab' 12 valve w/ a 5 speed 2WD that seams to be in pretty good shape.
It has 103,000 miles on it and drives fine. It appears to have been used mainly as a farm truck in Oklahoma, equipped with a gooseneck hitch and the wiring where the brake controller used to be.

---Doesn't appear to have been modified with the exception of the exhaust, still has the 'cat' but the muffler was removed and replaced w/ a straight pipe.
---The tires could stand to be replaced; good shape, but getting thin on tread.
---The driver's door speaker is shot. It unfortunately has the Infinity stereo system, I understand that aftermarket speakers are difficult to get them to work well w/ the dedicated amps.
---Couple of other minor problems: small tear in side of driver's seat, E-brake handle needs replacing.
---The block IS a 53 BTW.

Questions:
This will be a daily driver here in Texas and occasional towing of a 4500# boat. It didn't sound too loud at all, but am I going to have a difficult time with the state inspection without a muffler?

How concerned should I be regarding the 53 block in a '98 12 vavle?

Is the '98 12 valve subject to the 'Killer Dowel Pin' KDP?

I definitely notived a difference in power compared to the 2001 HO 6speed I was considering earlier (which has since sold BTW, you snooze - you loose), I'm correct in that the 12 valve is very easy and cost effective to increase torque/hp? ie: different pump plate or cam?
Or will the '53' block cause too much concern to even try the mildest mods?

5 speed vs 6 speed? Are the final drive ratios the same, 5th vs. 6th. I'm thinking I read that the 6 speed just gives a more ratios in the middle to choose from. This 5 speed was quite a bit 'smoother' than the other 6 speed.

He's asking $13,500. I'm thinking of offering $12,000.
Thoughts??? I understand that the 12 valve in a QC is somewhat rare, am I being too cheap @ $12,000? I'm considering the need for new tires and fixing the radio speaker.

P.S. Mods, please move this thread to the 12 Valve section if more appropriate.

Yes it would need the kdp fix. 5th gear may also be a problem in the future.

I wouldn t worry about the 53 block. I don t know if mine is or not even.

Seems like a fair price for 103 k miles....if you get it at 12 think yourself lucky.

They are easy to get more power out of but it adds up......1500 to 3000 pretty easy.

354's or 410's? long bed? leather? heated mirrors? slider rear window?

It's a longbed, w/ heated mirrors, cloth seats (could use the foam quick-fix trick), no rear slider.

BTW: It's a 'sport' version (blue) that has Ranch Hand front (w/ full brush guard) & rear bumpers along with a bed tool box.
I'd actually prefer to not have the Ranch Hand, I'd rather not have the extra weight and air turbulance on the front and I already have a bed tool box to use.

I'm thinking I'd find someone who wants the bumpers; take their factory bumpers plus xxx amount of cash. This would problably end up being a 'Sport' (it's the 1st sport version that has the regular 'squared-off' grill) with the regular chrome bumpers. I don't think this would loo too bad, maybe pretty good as I'm really not the biggest fan of the 'Sport' version's monochromatic look anyway.

What's the cost / solution for the 5th gear if it causes trouble. I rembember reader something about a lock-nut backing off or the splines shearing off or something.

I bought a 98 12V QC out of OK with a 53 block too.......

I havent had any probs with the 53 block. I lost fifth gear one time..... and got bit by the kdp..all under warranty though.

my truck has 120, 000 on the clock now and no big probs .....i replaced the clutch, and the oil pan gasket.

I am from TX too and have never had a prob passing vehicle inspection without my muffler or cat. I am from a small town though.

If the muffler is that big of a deal just get an after market 4 inch exhaust with a muffler.

two years ago, when I bought my truck.....I looked at several....I wanted a 98 12 v.....I paid 14.5 and mine had more miles then.....but it is a 4x4 dually.

I have not heard of any 98 12v for less then 12k......regardless of condition or miles. On a side note I ve had three serious offers to buy it since I ve had it for more then I have in it.

12 -13 with 1500$ in bumpers on it.....and only 100k miles....seems fair compared to what i saw. Most were hammered work trucks.

But that is Canadian money isn't it? I see those ads for over $20k USD on the 1998 and regardless of the mileage I think they're nuts. I'm still kicking myself for not jumping on a deal I seen a little while back. A black short bed, QC, 12V, auto, 4x4, with immaculate interior, nice fiberglass topper, no 5th wheel hitch was ever installed, and only 80k miles. It seems like he offered it to me for $12,500, but I didn't really have the money so... it ended up going on eBay for about $16k.

Eh, well they can put it up "for sale" at that price but who would be willing to pay a nearly new price for something that is almost 8 model years old!? If somehow the whole market managed to run the prices up that high I'd just go and get a 3G (or maybe even a Durasmack that I could get more than the employee discount on).

or $13500 for my red sport (i hate red) QC short bed 1998 12v 5spd 4x4. 137k miles and all new brakes, balljoints and steering components + a new clutch and 4" exhaust. Down side needed a timing cover and the KDP fixed as soon as i got it home and a whole lot of oil blown off of the front because it was leaking so bad.

I think you are getting hosed over $18k no matter how low the mileage or how nice the truck. for a total of 20k i could be close to having twins, a pulling clutch and a few other goodies on mine possibly even some major engien work done if i provide the labor

A texas truck

if it has a gooseneck and was a farm truck you know it was worked hard or towed hard with.. The mileage is low and the engine is probably good, but i would be more skeptical as to check the suspension, test drive it, which u already have, towing the 4500 lb boat is nothing for that truck, believe me... it will tow it with ease. I wouldnt know much about what they are worth, but the other truck with the 140K is worth a good look for 10K i think its a better bargain....

Tx

Believe it or not, that truck will sell.....Cummins and trucks in general are a hot commodity in Alberta (oilpatch, farming, red-necks, wannabe cowboys etc.)
