Another 727 to NV4500 swap!!

Hey all, I have a 1991 non-I/C pickup with a 727 currently. I just bought a complete 1994 with the NV4500 trans for $1600 that has 404k miles on it. Can I expect to have to rebuild the 4500 before I install it? To my knowledge the transmission has never been touched.

Also what besides the engine adapter, starter, flywheel, clutch, etc. will I need to grab? Will a 2nd gen brake and clutch pedal work on a first gen? Also what clutch is everyone running? I plan on being in the 250-300hp range and only tow occasionally. Will I have to have driveshafts lengthened or shortened? Do you think if I took the 29 spline and 23 spline transfer case adapters to a machine shop that they would cut both in half and reweld a 29-23 spline adapter? Or can I reclock the 241 t-case to a passenger drop? Will I be able to use the 2nd gen trans crossmember in the 1st gen or will I need to fab up something?

Sorry for the long post, but I have a week off college for spring break and rather than go to cancun, Im showing my redneck side and doing a tranny swap and just trying to get everything rounded up beforehand so I can do as much as possible in that week.

Thanks in advance, Andrew.

Go to the 1st gen section and look up this swap, it has been done many times.

Here are a few bits of info.
The NP-241 t-case will not work on a 1st gen.
You will need a NP-205 with the 29 splines.
You will re-use the 1st gen crossmember, which you will mostly likely need to moved back one hole in the frame.
Driveshaft will be very close and should be able to be re-used.
The 2nd gen pedals will not work.
You will need to fab up a 2 inch by 2 inch metal spacer for under the NV-4500. Advanced Adapters also sells this spacer, if you don't want to fab one.
I run the South Bends Con-OFE in 3 my trucks, but that might be overkill for you if it is just a daily driver. I buy the clutches right here -Look up Lary at the DTR store.
Hope this helps.

Oliver,

I checked several forums using the google machine and had a hard time finding a swap where they had two complete pickups sitting side by side to grab parts from.
I just came across a 205 with 29 splines with approximately 30,000 miles on it for $200, so I may be selling my 23 spline 205.
Fabbing up a 2 by 2 spacer should be a piece of cake.
Do you know of a good source to get the first gen pedals? I havent found any in any salvage yards around here.

Thanks, Andrew

Great price on that 29 Splined NP-205!
I will check my shop for an extra set of 1st gen pedals.

I figured rather than pay 175 for the 23-29 adapter, I'd spend the extra money and get a 29 spline case, because I know the splines on the front output shaft are worn because the nut came loose.
Thanks for checking on the pedals for me.

Thanks, Andrew

You want pedals from the hydraulic clutch years. (My '84 still didn't have, but by '88 they did for sure.)

There's a good chance you have to notch/massage the frame for starter clearance.

I like the OE 13" Sachs clutch that comes in the 1stgens. Not sure the power rating, but its definitely beefier that what comes in the 2ndgens stock.

I had an 89 with the 727. Great truck My first automatic. Never had any trouble with it and always met my needs.

Now have a 96 with the 4500. Yuck peice of trash tranny. Lost 5th gear twice. Look up 5th gear troubles. Bought a rebuilt tranny with the improved shaft and so far no trouble. But it still has much to big of a gap between gears for heavy hauling. So added a spicer 3 speed auxilary. Great like driving a twin stick Mack. What have I done? I had a nice 727 and loved it, now have a complicated truck that my wife will not drive, and it is more like a tractor trailer then a pickup.

Bottom line what do you do with the truck the 727 may not be so bad after all.
