Amsoil Severe Gear 75/90W in NV4500
Can I use this oil in it or not? I bought the truck used and that is what the previous owner used. I had to swapped trannies and put the same stuff in it, but after researching different lubes, I think I am suppose to be using Amsoil MTL. I have about 200 miles on it now and cannot find MTL up here. Went to the local Dodge dealer and they have the Mopar part #4874459 for $23 a quart. Do you think I should drain the oil and put in the Mopar oil? Thanks

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
If it shifts fine, leave er b. JMHO
The service manual only recomends 4 quarts of Mopar part # 4874459. If I recall that is a 30 wt (more or less) oil with special additives for the syncros.

The amsoil your talking about it MTG, not MTL. Here is the service description, https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtg.aspx
I ran this for about 5k and did not like how it shifted the transmission started to not like 3rd gear. I switched it out for the factory stuff and have been humming along for 20K with smooth shifting.
There is really no substitute for the right stuff. Those engineers who spec out the lubes get paid really well for a reason.

Use only Castrol Syntorq or Amsoil MTG.
Anyone using anything else should drain it immediately.
Many manufacturers say their product works but most have been proven to cause failures, the ones that haven't been proven probably just don't have enough miles.

Stop!
The stuff you are using is GL-5 and has way too much sulphur in it. The nv4500 uses lots of soft metals in the synchros which don't fair well in a sulphur bath. You can buy a gallon of the correct fluid from quad4x4 for about 70 bucks. These tranny's are very expensive when it comes time to start replacing parts (the special tools aren't cheap either). Stick with the right juice.....it's worth the squeeze; on your wallet. cd

Amsoil, Redline and Royal Purple all make a GL-4 fluid.
I just bought 4 quarts of the Royal Purple Max Gear GL-4 for $47.00 today at the local race shop.
I have the Amsoil GL-4 in it now and will try the Royal Purple, IF it warms up.
