Alternator not charging and turbo ?
Hi, My alternator is charging around 11.8 volts. So I replace my brushes and it still is charging around 11.8v, the original brushes were worn down to the point were it didnt look like they were making good connections. Im going to pull the alt again tonight and take it to the shop tomorrow to have it checked. I dont know what else could be wrong with the alt if it wasnt the brushes though, which makes me think it might be something else. Ive read the regulator is in the PCM in which case if it was bad I would have to buy a new PCM, right? However if I understand it correctly the regulator doesnt control the amount of amperage coming out of the alt, just the amount going into the batteries. So form this I believe its not the PCM, but still in the alt. Is there something else it could be?
Also the little prop in my turbo has a little side to side up and down slop, not much but still enough to feel. Is this normal? How much are the tolerences? Can you rebuild them?
Thanks

There should be no discernable back and forth movement though.

If you are only getting 11.8v its not charging at all you are reading batt. voltage. Had this problem on my 96. You don't say what year you have. My diode pack was bad,its replaceable, found it after replacing brushes. To emanate the PCM get a cheap voltage regulator from the auto parts store and try this.

Depending on the year, you most likely have a 120 amp fuse in the underhood power distribution box (on drivers side). This can be popped real easy if the terminals on your alt. are not covered (I found this out twice now, I can pop it just by doing a oil filter change). That or the crank sensor should be checked before going on to the PCM. Good luck and hope it works out for you (on the cheaper way).
