Aftermarket Air Filter in CA-will it pass?

Bypass the long story,

I have to take my truck in to get registered in CA this week.
Although it is a 215 pump, it does have the required CA EPA label
so it is legal to register here
I have to pass a visual inspection to register.
I have a Cat, which they didn't even look at first time it was registered
BUT
I put on a K&N bhaf, will that cause a problem for the inspection?

I see no reason why a K/N filter should flunk your test. They're on tons of vehicles.

Thanks, good news

I have the stock air filter box with a K&N filter, but I'd rather leave me bhaf cone on that have to revert to the stock box
Now I just have to get a favorable weight cert

Currently the CA diesel smog stuff is suppose to start 12-31-10, and vehicles 8500 GVWR, they are trying to increase it to 10K. And I think the starting year is 98 and newer. I lucked out!

If they don't let you register it, I could mail you my KN CARB sticker...

The smog will be for 98.5and up. You have a 12valve,you should be exempt..It starts with the 24valve motors...

really? if that was the case then my parents would have their lives made for them but they dont. i understand that our people do get services but that doesnt come nowhere compared to what they have to go through to make it here. i dont mind people expressing their felelings as long as it is done in a repectful manner. not all imigrants abuse of the u.s. "systems" although i also understand that there are those that do. it just sucks to see my parents go through life the way they did only tryin to get thier children to succeed in life so that my siblings and i dont have to go through the hardships they went through. and we arent here "trying to get our land back". most of the imigrants i know are happy to be here even though they get treated like crap.

Justin, where did you get that info? I hope you're right

Justin, That's great news...where did you get that info?

I checked with a well known llocal diesel mechanic 2-3 months ago, he is trying to be part of an advisory group for the rule committe (or whatever its called)
At that time he said they are trying to exempt the 12 valve 98s, but he didn't say that it had been decided for sure.

Even if my truck was subject to smog but it wasn't until 12/10, no reason not to move ahead with some mods now.
Opening up the exhaust might be a different matter though...

Thanks for the info!

Barngal6, they should trigger the smog checks off the 8th digit of the VIN, so that is how they will differentiate.

Doubt they will do anything other than a plug in of a scanner, and your 12V will not tell them anything, so it would really be a moot point.

Your truck is all mechanical. I don't believe the 12valves are ecm driven. I mean you cannot hook up a chip to them to get more power. The truck has to have an OBD2 port under the dash. They are gonna hook up there to read your ECM.

Has anybody else heard if the 98 12 valves will be exempt? When I get back from deployment I want to sell my 3rd gen and get a 2nd gen (preferably a 12 valve). I also want to mod it but with the Diesel smog check I was worried. I know there is no OBD port to hook to but there is also a visual check according to what I have seen online. One part, “the snap test”, involves pushing the accelerator to the floor ( or RPMs 2000-3000) and immediately releasing. This is done 3 times. On the 2nd and 3rd tries, the smoke can’t linger longer than 3 sec. I guess you could put any adjustments made to the P-pump back to stock but I would think that would be a headache. I don’t have any experience with 12 valves, just what I have read. So, I could be way off base. Maybe the common mods done to P-pump won’t even make that much smoke with this test? Anybody have any thoughts?
