advanced timming question!! please help

i took off a p pump for a friend because we are changing a leaky tappet cover gasket. they said the timming was advanced 15 degrees. well the shaft on the pump has a key way slot, and the gear has no slot. how did this ever keep from slipping or is this how people advance the timming on a p pump? did they change the gear to do so? and do u just torque it more? please help asap(need truck back together soon) thanks!!

There is no key, gear position on shaft is how the timing is adjusted.
Torque on the nut holds it in place. Shaft and gear must be spotlessly clean before torquing to keep it from slipping.

why does the pump shaft have a key slot on it? i know that the vp44 and cp3 has a keyed gear and shaft and you can just pull the pump off and on with runnin the motor up on tdc.

VP has a solenoid that adjusts the timing, which changes on the fly. CP3 is simply a high pressure pump, has absolutely nothing to do with timing. The taper on the shaft is what keeps it from spinning. If it were keyed, you couldn't adjust the timing unless you cut a new seat into the shaft, or rebroached the gear.
