Acetone as an additive to diesel fuel???

I came across the findings of a study that states that acetone mixed with fuel can improve performance of engines. There is quite a number of details, some pertaining to diesel engines, that make it worth the read. It's at:

http://www.pureenergysystems.com/new...00069_Acetone/

I fyou read it make sure to read the FAQs, too. This study was released in March 2005, maybe it's been addressed in the past in some threads on DTR. Regardless, I was wondering if anyone had tried to use acetone as a fuel additive in a truck.

Myth Buster shot it down. No increase in mpg. You will also hear from many that it wears out pumps and injectors.

Fact - acetone readily evaporates at 70degF - your fuel tank is usually around 100degf and warmer from return-fuel - how long will acetone remain in solution at elevated temperatures?

Find a vendor, read the MSDS for the straight skinny...............

The sine wave----

This line of BS makes it's way around every couple of years. Acetone has an energy content about half that of #2 diesel so you get nothing there. It does mix with diesel but at the ratio's suggested it does the square root of nothing to help atomization. On the really negative side; acetone is one of the strongest solvents you can purchase, it loves to eat rubber/composite materials (the stuff that keeps your fuel system from leaking) if you don't believe me see what it does to any 0-ring you can buy or some of the latex/nitrile protective gloves you use to work on your rig, they start to dissolve almost immediately and your hands smell like the acetone.

I know a few good friends who tried it and said it was a flop.

I was involved with the same type of test the next semester using "fuel pills." Hehe.

Oh, we also tested on a 24v Cummins . . . no gain.

This was using pure metered data, power per fuel volume. BSFC if you want to get technical.
