98 12 V Quad vs 01 dually A few q's

I finally found two.

One is
1998 Quad Cab 4x4 12valve auto Loaded
171,000 miles
new tires
good shape
does not appear to have been bombed
$13,250

Overall truck drove great. A few issues:

Started hard on a 70 degree F day, any ideas why?

Engine stalled if I pumped power pedal to lurch truck and let off, any ideas why?

Tranny shifted fine and smooth but truck seemed a liitle doggy compared to a 99 24V that I drove, no passing power at all, ideas?

The other is 2001 3500 Quad 4x4 Dually
Flatbed
5speed
220,000 miles
great shape
$13,750

I have seen the entire repair history at the dealer new brakes, tranny, front end parts, all oil changes(monthly) etc

Truck used at a commuter, never towed

Drives great

What can I expect for milage with this truck?(3.55 rearend)

Should I buy both? I like the idea of the 98 but I know more history on the 01 and would have a newer truck for almost the same money. No real need for the flatbed other than to impress the yuppies on the Hi-Way. Thanks in advance for your opinions, and sorry about the length.

I'm thinking it was hard to start because the fuel hose is probably old and cracked up. It doesn't really let fuel out yet, but it will let air in.

Maybe the timing is on the low side causing the lack of power?

Well the 12V and 24V are two completely different things. The 24V is a good deal computer controlled and is more likely to have issues due to being more complex. The fuel system in the 12V is nearly bulletproof where as the 24V system has a very poor lift pump and injection pump design so they may fail without any real reason. Also if you are in to modifying the 12V can be bombed a lot cheaper than the 24V can for the same amount of power.

Who uses a Dually Flatbed for commuting??? I would be very suspect of that truck - could have seen some hard use. The 98 has the 12V and can be easily repaired. The hands down winner (and I own a 01 24 HO)

Valid point Dr. Evil, I'd guess he commuted to and from his construction job with it loaded down with stuff. Nobody gets a flatbed to drive to their office job....

Actually, it was a commuters truck, my friend owns the dealership that he's trading it to. He usedit as a mobile office and does occasionally haul stuff on the flatbed, but no 5th wheel trailor or anything.

I'm leaning towards the 12valve, just waiting for the mechanic to check a few things for me on monday, like the kdp, the hard start, the tranny, and the pumps. I have no real use for the dually, but wouldn't mind driving it if I got reasonable milage and more truck for the same money. I just have to check on the insurance difference.

Thanks all for your replies and keep em Cummin.

Noormy, if you want more truck for the money get the 12V........just because its a newer truck doesnt mean its better at all. The 12V are superior in many ways. If you dont mind dropping some money ($3-4k) on the tranny it will easily and handidly outpower a bombed 24V.

As well, the 98 quad 12V is a very rare truck - they were only made for 3 months.

Well since you asked it is always good to check the front end, the track bar and balljoints are known to get a little sloppy which can get expensive to fix.

I would be willing to bet that the idle is just too low. My uncles truck(97 12 valve auto) used to be hard to start, and would die if you tapped the pedal, and let off fast, and we bumped up the idle some, and it doesz a lot better now. I bet thats what it is. Id get the 12 valve myself

yea me to, my idle was to low when i bought my 96 which made me nervous. i thought maybe i was getting air in the fuel line. i turned up the idle to 850rpm approximately and it made a world of a diff on the way it started and it would also occasionally stall in the summer in drive with the air on, when idle was turned up no more hard starts or stalling. i was also told that when i turn up the idle that if in a month the idle goes back down then i do have a leak somewhere which hasn't happened.

Isn't the factory idle 750rpms?

I just set my idle where i like it best. Usually a couple hundred rpm's under 1k is fine. If you go look at the truck again; hold just slightly down on the pedal when you crank it, and if it starts pretty quick, then its probably idling too low. What does it idle at just sitting there in park, and what does it idle at in drive?

Ok, thanks. I guess I was confusing it with my cars, both idle at 750rpms. I always give my pedal a little nudge on startup, always helps fire it up faster.

Well, your right. 750rpm's is a good idle, and i think its very close to what the factory reccomends it idle at, but as long as theyre not too much under that, you can basically idle them wherever you like best.
