97 auto won't shift out of 1st
I just bought another one..will take posession of it Monday. Its another 1997 2500 12v ,this ones auto.
If u take off in drive, medium to heavy acceleration, it won't come out of 1st; but let off, and it shifts up to second then goes on fine. Other than that it runs, shifts perfectly. It has 200k miles, original tranny.
I did a search, but couldn't find anything.
Any ideas of a simple fix b4 I take it to a tranny shop?
Thanks, Billy

OK, did another search, this time on all open forums, instead of 12v driveline. Saw lots of speed sensors posts.
Does the 97 have a speed sensor on the transmission or transfer case which could cause this?
Thanks.

Yes....
From what I found during my recent auto trans escapade the speed sensors can play a greater role in the "stuck in first" scenario compared to the "take off in third" scenario.
I'll bet many are just tired of re hashing these threads....
There are two...one with 3 wires and one with 2.
Both can go bad with no readily indicated codes it would appear.

The sensor didn't fix it. I'll call the trranny shop tomorrow. I searched this well, but most posts were open ended..they never posted back saying what actually fixed the problem. The sensor had 2 wires, I didn't see one with three. I was hoping there mighht be a way I could diagnose and fix it but it must be an internal trans. problem.

I put the 97 2500 in the trans shop Monday. Troy called today, its ready. he said the torque converter failed and sent debris tru the trans., causing the problems.
Good thing, the '00 2500 is starting to do the same thing!
