Hundred times easier with the pump out of the truck.

I don't think that would ever be a problem as long as the banjo stays tight - which it will....

Well that makes me feel a little better. Makes a person wonder what the pump has been through and if it has been properly rebuilt tho. I think their reputation is decent.

Is your other pump handy? Compare the two.... I'm thinking they all had a heli-coil deal from factory on the inlet...

not handy, it's in town at the "shop" I can tell you when I get there. Don't have the room in my little shop for the great beast. Pump isn't quite out yet. Getting some help\shop from my friend Chris. Pump isn't out yet.

Better take a 3GSK for that fever, with a shot of 16* timing.... That should help ya grind that plate down to a #10 or so.....

whew... ok here it is. I'll try to keep it short. As I mentioned earlier, I brought the truck to my friend the tech in town. I do regret not doing it all myself but I was largly involved. The new Injection pump came UPS from USDiesel. Packing was a little worse for wear but no damage to the unit. I also ordered a lift Pump while we were at it and a new prefilter screen. As you suspected 9812ram the "helicoil" deal in the fuel inlet of the rebuilt was infact in the stock unit as well. Haven't fiqured why they do that yet. We had Dodge manuals, and this forums support to work with so the pumps went in without incident. The only exeption was the heater gasket I forgot.(**** rookies) The prescreen had a small amount of filings and a little dirt but considering it hadn't been cleaned in at least 3 years(20,000 miles)....not bad. While this was happening I found and spoke to the original owner and asked him if he did any pump mods. Turns out he had the AFC open and he put in a plate he thinks. I opened the old unit up and there is a #5 fuel plate. Further digging in a box and I found the original one he took out of the truck. I have taken the beast out a few times and it runs really good, better than ever really. It is definately down on power with the stock plate. While I had the old pump on the bench I made a custom tool and practiced removing the GSprings. A cinch on the bench. Also when I hand turn the pump I can feel a rough spot as if one or more of the plungers are scraping or something.Definately not smooth. It seems obvious to me that Infidel had the right diagnosis. A couple others concurred as well. So here I am with a happy truck and I'm beaming.....what now, well I am wondering wether to put the #5 in or just wait and maybe put in a 10 and a 3GSK.
So listen, I just gotta say "Thanks" to all that helped me with this. Not only have I fixed my truck because of your help, I have learned a lot about the great beast. If I knew how to post a pic I would post the #5 plate from the 1990's......not sure it's changed much.

Put the #5 in it.
If you're sending the old pump in for a core US Diesel will dock you for no plate.
Put the one they gave you with the new pump back in the old.
