Arrow 96 Cummins - Mechanical or Electronic Fuel Injection Pump?

I'm going to be looking at a 96 Cummins tomorrow and was wondering what type of fuel injection pump it had on it, mechanical or electronic? Also, what type of fuel injection system does it use? Indirect injection or direct injection? Is there an ECU in the 96? Thanks!

P7100 inline mechanical pump. The computer doesn't control the engine but accessories like AC, charging system, TC lockup, etc...

I'm glad to hear that. After the problems I've had with my VW TDI I don't have much faith in electronic injection pumps anymore.

Who makes the pump? Cummins or an outside source?

Bosch

Edit: If it's a stick you'll have the 215 HP pump - Easy to get stupid HP out of it. Auto's came with a 180 HP pump - Stupid power is still achievable but requires a little more tinkering...

Bosch, eh? That's what my VW's have on them. At least it's a mechanical pump.

I'll be getting an automatic. If the 180 pump ever fails, could I install a 215 pump? Or have the 180 rebuilt into a 215?

In the VW TDI, 5 speeds come with a 10mm pump and automatics get an 11mm pump. Lots of 10mm people swap pumps or have them rebult into 11mm pumps.

Thanks for your help.

The pump is just bolted on like any external part and can be changed or modified as you wallet allows. IMO the P7100 pump is the best offered on a CTD because it's lubricated via engine oil and not fuel like the VP's (89-93 12V & 24V CTDs). They take a lot of abuse without many complaints.

Heh, I know what you mean. Would there be a noticable power increase using a 215 on an otherwise stock automatic? I assume the 215 is more expensive than the 180, so would upgrading to a 215 be worth it if/when the pump does fail?

I'm definitely glad to hear that. Mercedes also uses a pump that uses engine oil to lube it. You hardly ever hear of a pump failure in a Benz.

VW uses a pump that's only lubricated by fuel. So when you get a bad tank of fuel with a bunch of water in it, like I did recently, you get to buy a new pump. I was quoted $1700 to replace my TDI pump ($1300 for factory rebuilt pump, $400 labor).

I'm starting to like Dodges more and more. For the record I did own a Dodge truck once. 1992 D-150 1/2 ton SWB 3.9 V6 5 speed. I bought it in 1996 with 98k miles and drove it for 4 years and put 50k miles on it before I sold it. Never once had a problem with it.

I hope it would never fail. But I've also learned to "never say never".

I'm new to Cummins and I'm just trying to get some info before I make a decision on which diesel truck to buy.

Chris, I can't remember the last time I heard of a P-7100 failing. Most guys and gals that want the big power use the 12v and the P pump.

With this site being here as long as it has, it's hard to believe a question like this would be asked. All a person would have to do is just read very few of the post, and an awful lot of these questions would be answered. I'm not knocking new folks joining, that's good. It's just some of the most outlandish questions being asked. Just read a little and you won't look so ignorant. Questions like this don't even make sense. And somebody really answered it. Man.

I started new also, but I studied a little bit before the questions started. Try it. It works.
