As an ex-dealer tech, I would say to avoid dealers. I was at a local Dodge/Chrysler/Ford/Toyota/Honda dealer (very large dealer for our area...probably quite small by your standards) and their procedure was to take in vehicles from auction, trades, etc., clean them up and do any work needed as quickly and CHEAPLY as possible (including using non-factory parts from the cheapest part's stores in town), and get it out on the line. Their theory was to hide any problems for 30 days until their warranty was out (our dealer offered a 30 day warranty on all vehicles, even older ones).
Look for classified guides for the area you will be going to. You have as good of a chance of getting a quality vehicle from a private seller as a dealer. And if you get one that does need a little monor work, at least you will know what parts will be going into it. If you need to shop sight unseen, try ebay. but I have noticed that although you can get deals on all kinds of things, diesel trucks seem to go high on there, at least compared to local prices.
Don't use just one source when shopping...try to get as many sources as you can and watch for a truck. If you have the time, be patient for just what you want (price & model). You might even try www.trucktrader.com or even do a search for auto auction sites around there. Don't be scared of auctions...thats where new car dealers get the majority of their used vehicles from.
