95 Dodge cummins general question on motor.........
Hello Yall
I’m new to the site but not to trucks, I have owned a 7.3 NA idi Ford dually and now I am going to go look at a 95 4x4 Dodge 2500 Cummins diesel truck that needs a rear end and I can get it at a good price. My question to you the experts on Cummins, because I am not too familiar with them YET. What do I look for to tell me signs that there might be something wrong with the motor? The guy told me that the tranny was rebuilt last year and the motor was replaced with another motor because the original motor’s fuel pump went to crap and then while he was driving it at the time the turbo took a crap because of this and so he just decided to get a whole different motor. The truck has 205k miles and the motor has 30k less so 175k miles is where it puts it. Now my other question is did these motor come with intercoolers and how easy is it to bump up the HP via the pump or turbo? Not sure how you do it, I did on my 7.3 Ford but like I said im new to Cummins but have been wanting one for some time. Help out fellas

Intercooled from 91.5 and newer.
Make sure it is an inline P7100 pump, some people have stuck the older VE pump in as a replacement.
P7100 pumps are easy to turn up, even the 160 Hp pumps.
If you don't mind us asking, what is considered a good price? Prices in general have really dumped in the past 6 months, so figuring buying a rear for 700 ish, and assuming your time is worth nothing, I would say you need to get this thing for 2500 or less to make it worth the uncertainty of what engine was stuffed in there.

3k on this truck too high?? Plus How can I tell if the pump is a p7100 is there a picture on here some where. Like I said I am new to cummins motors. Not that I have not done my share of engine swaps and rebuilds. Yes my time is not worth anything, I got the shop and the lift to put this sucker up in the air and drop her down in no time.

ive located a rear end for $350 so Ill see if the guy will work his way down in price. I just thought the price did not sound to bad for a year old rebuilt tranny and a decent truck that I can have operational in a 1/2 day at the shop. If everything else is fine. ill keep you guys posted as to what happens with the truck. I go Sat to wheel and deal.

That sounds like a good price for the rear. Is it exactly the same as what you have in there? I question the part about the previous owner saying the fuel pump took out the turbo. But, no matter as you have a different engine in it.
As far as the pump goes, look here:

The p7100 is called "high pressure injection pump" in the diagram. This pic is taken from infidels pics. Take a look at his other pics. Lots of good one there.
As far as turning the pump up, tons of info here, just do a search and you will have lots of entertainment reading up on it. KD

No, 3K is OK, especially if you found a D70 with the correct ratio for 350 bucks, that is cheap!
Do not get too excited about the tranny only being a year old, you can kill one pretty fast in stock configuration. Mine made it 30K and almost 2 years driving like a baby before the TC clutch died.
The trans is fine, but I need to drop it to replace the TC. Figure on a good TQ and valve body from a reputable supplier into the price, cheap disen't really hold when you have the Cummins grunt.

how easy is it to bump up the HP via the pump or turbo?
It will also help you identify which pump you have.
