94 keeps dying
hi my 94 dodge will start and idle fine, but when i try to get it up to speed, i get a chattering sound from the engine compartment and i start to lose power. if i lift my foot at the first sign of the chattering, she will usually stay running for a time. if i step down on the accelerator, she will continue to bog until i lift my foot, at which time the motor continues to try to wind for a few more seconds, then the rpms will drop and the truck will die. this happens with a warm or cold engine. do i have injector/lift pump problems?? i changed the fuel filter and cleaned the prefilter after the first time, and i've been running truck stop fuel, blended to 40 below (iowa) ANY suggestions would be appreciated!! thanks~

I have seen several trucks with this problem over the years, (mostly 94s) and unfortunately, by your description, it is an internal injection pump problem. The chattering sound and power loss may be accompanied by occasional stalling under load. There will be some wear found inside the pump which causes the governor to act up this way. Talk to a Bosch service center and get their opinion, but I think you will end up with an overhaul or an exchange unit.

unfortunately, i am beginning to think you are right. my lift pump was bad, found some metal under the check valve that eventually ruined it, but replacing LP didn't improve the truck much.
