i did in my 03 but it is easier in these trucks, flywheel and clutch is different, you need the front driveshaft and the front of the 2 piece, the transfer case rod is longer, the crossmember mount is further back. not sure about your year model transfer case tho mine worked, if you have a donor truck then its easy if not you need to make sure you have it all. if you have to buy a new clutch southbend has the whole kit for conversion as far as clutch and flywheel the tranny is 6 to 8 inches longer and about 300 lbs heavier but we did mine in 4 hrs

You can do it but it won't be cheap. Also be advised that 6 speed parts are getting very hard to find.

Don't understand why he would want too..
Unless he is looking for the split through the gears.
He isn't going to find any better gas mileage.

Also the early NV5600 came w/ small inputs, and 12.25 clutches, so if he finds one of those he can use same clutch, ect.

I guess thats why all the big pullers go for th NV4500 instead of the NV5600.
Everyone thinks the NV5600 is a stronger tranny, but thats not the case.

If youve been through 11 NV4500, you need to either buy a NEW one or find a different rebuilder.

NV4500's are popular for pulling\racing because they're easily repairable, onsite - NV5600 hard parts are scarce, takes a large wheelbarrow full of jigs and fixtures to get it apart, do it right - NV4500's are considered junk in some circles because they lose 5th o\d at the drop of a hat - NV5600's are good for towing, with perfect gearsplit - simple fix from GM and a new yoke could cure the 5spd Dodge o\d problem - still, NV5600 is best for towing

You can replace three 4500s for the cost of the conversion, and two for the price of one 5600 rebuild, and yes, they break too.

Boy I thought I was the only one that liked the NV4500.

Not so fast. I'd love to have a gear between 3rd and 4th, I tow heavy too. Plus the 5600 is a heavier duty transmission, no doubt about that. Two problems. When 5600s could be found the conversion cost for a 2WD was around $4000, now it is probably closer to 6 grand. Then there is the problem of the speedo gear, nowhere in a 5600 for it. 4WD has their gear in the transfer case, so that is a non-problem for them.

I'll just keep replacing mine every 100k or so, I can live with it. **** sure better than an automatic.
