5th Gear Nut

On truck No 2 in my signature line, should I take preventative measures and fix the 5th gear nut problem or should I wait until I have a problem and fix it then? If I wait, do I bear a likely risk of worse damage?

Thanks.

In my own experience 1/95/5sp, 3/97/5sps, 1/98/5spd. All of them lost the nut on 5th gear. No damage to the rest of the transmission occured. On the first 4 of my 5spd all I did was double nut 5th gear and weld them together. Never lost 5th again. That was pulling heavy loads almost every day. The last one I had a rebuild put in with the splined shaft. It wasn't shifting very well.
