5th gear gone!

Hi all,
My father was driving the truck and lost 5th gear on sunday. I am not sure what to do to fix this, the cheapest way. He has been using it to move stuff to a new home in placerville,Ca and I am at school tell friday so he is stuck with out 5th. So what should I do or can I do to fix this?
Is there any one local to the area with the tools or knowledge, that could helpout a fellow member?
Thanks alot
Jesse

Do a search for this problem and you'll get more results than you can read.

the only real fix IS getting the updated mainshaft, so it's a good temporary solution to weld the nut on, or get the upgraded nut.

I had the trans in my garage, but since u have 4x4 like me, all u have to do is take the rear housing bolts off with a 12 point 10mm socket or wrench. and tap the housing off, it has 2 dowels pins that hold it in place alittle. Then u can look at my pictures and it's right there to clean up and weld, or replace with the new nut, but welding it seems to be a great solution until u want to rebuild with the new fully splined mainshaft (quad4x4 has the mainshaft and 5th gear for around $280 i think)

update

Hi all,
I decide to go with the new main shaft from quad4x4, the gold package. The staff was very helpful on the phone at quad4x4 in deciding what package to order. I am going to take out the tranny and then take it to my friend’s hydraulics shop and work on it there. I could take pictures and then post them if any one is interested. Any tips that would help would be appreciated also?
Thanks again
Jesse

Runamuk,
I am going to take it apart in Santa Cruz and then take the tranny to my friend’s hydraulics shop in San Jose and finish the transmissions guts there. I have just moved to Placerville and don’t have all of my tools set up or a place to work, this why I am doing it in Santa Cruz.

Box5,
As far as I know I have an 8in punch, the tool to lock the 5th gear nut on and a special tool to install the new torque king designed nut.

Thanks,
Jesse

You don't weld the nut to the shaft. Put two nuts on the shaft and then weld the nuts together.
