47RE ?s

OK, I just drove a 97 3/4 4x4 Cummins with the auto. The trans was rebuilt 62K miles ago but it seems to be binding in 1st gear. When starting from a dead stop, it feels like the e-brake is on until it builds enough boost to power through and catch 2nd. The brakes are definitely not grabbing as it will coast easily without slowing abnormally. Any thoughts?

Low stall converters will do that. Doggy until you get the turbo to spool up

No, this is different. It feels like you are bringing the boost up with the brakes on just like if you were trying to do a brake stand. I've driven a few diesels with automatics and they are mostly just slow to react until you build boost.

Did the truck have a boost gauge?
Is the engine rpm slow to rise or does it jump and wait for the converter to catch up?

No boost gauge - it was used to tow a contractors trailer. Engine rpm raises normally but trans does not react in relation to rpm - again, feels like you have the brakes applied.

Make sure it IS actually starting out in first gear. Sometimes the governor will act up and they will start up in second and feel just as you describe. Try pulling the shifter down into manual low as you are pulling away, and see if it forces a downshift.

So, if it forces the downshift, it should mean that the governor pressure solenoid is cooked, right? If that is the problem, I should probably replace the transducer and install a shift kit while I'm in it as well.

Exactly. I always do the transducer when I do the solenoid.

torquefan - I went back last night with a friend who is a mechanic (and a dedicated Cummins guy ) and drove the truck again. Yep, starts in second. Pull down the lever and she drops right into first and shifts normally after that. Anyone know the part number for the transducer and solenoid for a 47RE? I have an extra one from my 46RE laying around that is in good shape that I can use for the moment - free parts are good.

I just found the numbers for my 46RE:

Transducer #56041403AA

Solenoid #4617210

Same as 47RE??

I have no idea about the part numbers, but I'm glad you're on the right track.

The part numbers I posted are for both 46RE and 47RE - this was confirmed by my local Dodge dealer. Hope that helps someone else down the line as well.
