4.10 to 3.54 gear swap
Heres my deal i had a shop change my gears in my 97 ram 5speed, i had a dana 80 limited slip unit for a 3.54 because i knew you had to change the carrier for the rear my question is do you have to change the carrier for the dana 60 front when going from 4.10 to 3.54, i have been driving it for a month know but today it snowed and i put it in 4wd and when i was driving it it shook real bad and when i kicked it out of 4wd it quit, anybody have any ideas not setup right or was he supposed to change the front carrier your help is appreciated

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
And both gear sets were changed to 3.54/3.55 and it binds up running in 4wd. If you were running in lock on good (non slipping) pavement they will bind some. Owners manual advises not runnning in lock for this reason.
If shop was able to set up, the carrier should be ok.
You say you "kicked" out of 4wd implies was binding up from running on good traction surface. Generally if back up a few feet will come right out.

yes i have some 4.10's anyways it was on ice and snow its not binding up so to speak it has a vibration when i get over 15 to 20mph, it was not there before the swap is it coincidence that the front driveshaft might have a bad u joint, when i disengage the 4wd the vibration stops instantly, i have owned 4wd's all my life and this is not common.

im confused by ur post. Are u still running 4.10's in the front? If so, thats bad news using 4x4 with 3.5's in the back.
The dana 80 needs the different carrier when going from 3.5's to 4.10's. The front Dana 60 just needs the gear set.

this being a diesel truck site i kindof figured you guys would use common sense and i did not have to explain the whole process now why in the heck would i put just 3.54's in the front what the crap would that gain me, use your heads guys its not a hard question i finially got ahold of my differential specialist and he confirmed that i do not have to change the carrier for the dana 60 unless i go to 4.56's, thanks alot
