2wd does not work but 4wd does

1998 3500 dually Manual transmission 4X4

I was using 4wd the other day and it was working fine. When I shifted the transfer case back to 2H, the truck wouldn't move. It was like being in neutral. The 4wd light on the dash works fine (on when in 4wd and it goes off when the shifter is placed in 2wd). I did find a vaccum line from the CAD that was broke. I put a rubber vaccum line over it in attempt to isolate the problem, but it didn't work. Any ideas why the truck won't move when in 2H.

Thanks

When that happened on my 97 2500 it was the rear end. Except I was in 2WD when it went. I slipped it into 4WD and got it somewhere where they could fix it. A magnet into the rear end filler hole took care of any questions.

Rear end or the output shaft on the transfer case. If your driveshaft spins, its your rear; driveshaft doesnt spin, output on the transfer case.

Jacked the truck up and put in 2h and 1st gear, the drive shaft didn't spin. Changed to 4h and 1st gear......the front tires spin, but not the back ones and the drive shaft still didn't spin. Guess my output shaft is broken. I was pulling a load of cattle (about 16k pounds through a wash and got stuck....had to have another truck pull me out)

Any ideas...should I have the 241 dhd tc rebuilt or buy a remanufactured one. I do a fair amount of pulling in 4 wheel drive hauling livestock in and out of dirt roads and washes. Will a 271 bolt up, they are sure a lot cheaper and heavier duty from what i understand. I have a gear vendor behind it?

Thanks for the input

Just for info

Found the problem......... The gear vendor broke inside. They're sending another one for 1/4 price of a new one. Way cheaper than a TC.
