1st gen motor into a 2 gen?
I been thinking about swapping a ctd engine and auto trans from a 92 into a 98
2500 gasser.
I have a 92 1 ton with no title and a chance to buy a 98 quad cab gas with a bad transmission. how would the gear ratios in the 98 be compatible for the ctd?
I am thinking the 1st gen engines with the ve pump would be more reliable than the P pump engines. And easier to work on.
I would have the 518 transmission that is not a lock up converter. So what if it slips a little, they still got good fuel mileage. And will hold up pulling normal loads that the 92 did.
I will need to figure out what to do with the computer hook up for the speedometer and alternator.
Any feed back will be appreciated,,

Reliability will be about the same.
Is it a 4x4? The transfer case drop is on the opposite side on a 1st gen.
Speedo will work fine on the truck, the pickup is in the rear axle.
Fun part will be making the OD work. I think I'd take the '92 PCM and mount it somewhere handy, then connect it up to the stuff that makes the OD work - and you can use it to run the alternator and intake heaters too. If you decide to go that way I'll go into more detail on what needs to be wired up.
As long as the gasser does not have 4.56's it will be OK. 4.10's were available with the Cummins.
You will need 2nd gen CTD engine mounts and then the engine will bolt in. I'd try to get a 2nd gen intercooler and plumbing too.
