1996 12v oil pressure situation PLease help SOS

I was using my truck today saw that the oil light came on. Shut it off, drove it home from my buddies stayed off till i dropped under 1000 rpms. Stopped truck for a minute than oil pressure went to 0. What do you think? Only thing I can think of is an Oil Pump?. Arnt those mechanical for the 12v with gears?, and does anyone know where t is located on the engine and how hard it is to replace it.Both the oil pressure guage and light came on on the dash. Thanks alot, Tom.

The oil pumps on these engine rarely fail, problem is most likely the gauge sender.
Make sure to use a sender from Cummins p/n 3923200
Generic auto parts senders don't last long.

Like Infidel and Diesel Dave 2 mentioned..get a Cummins Oil Pressure Sensor from Cummins.
1994-1998 Dodge 5.9L 12 Valve Cummins Oil Pressure Sensor part number: 1994-1997 (3923200).

Genos garage.com i think they have a listing for them,at dodge they are around $40ish.i put a remote gauge on the top of the oil filter housing to check every now and then.my wires and plug for the gauge sender(i am pretty sure it does the light and gauge) is a bit messed up.good luck.

Don't buy a sender from Napa unless you want to be replacing it again soon with one from Cummins that will last.
Generic senders are designed for gas engines and can't handle the vibration of a diesel engine.

No need to drain the oil but it will be easier to replace with a sender socket.
That you can get from Napa.

Cummins will sell you a sender over the phone and UPS it.
You will need your engine serial number> http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/Cpl.htm
Dealer locator> http://cumminspower.com/en/locator/

That's one thing I did find out...You will have to buy the sender socket...I tried a standard deep socket and no way would it work...

Quick question guys....Even thou the stock oil gauage is not the best...What is the normal oil pressure of a 12V....Mine when cold sits just above 275kpa (41 psi)...When hot, drops just a bit below 275 kpa (about 37-38 psi)

Is that still ok with a motor with 270K miles?

That's fine, Cummins says 10 psi minimum is ok but that would sort of scare me.

I just replaced it got the part from napa for 31 dollars and the socket for 12. The socket defiantly saved me. But it was a project took about 5 hours, old one broke into two pieces. Cummins wants 65 for their part so I just got the napa one today. And it fixed my problem. At start up I'm 40-44 warm 36-38

Casey has it right, watch out.
Sometimes the auto parts senders puke their guts out along with all your oil.

Yeah I will do, as of now it is fine and reading perfectly, I will replace it with a Cummins part later or when it breaks, but it'll work for now, thanks for all the help.

help

My cummins has recently started running low oil pressure. Could the pump be going out? It runs about 40psi when cold and between 20 to 10 when driving and accelerating. Any theories?
