Love this Cummins!
And that was with some "horsing around"
440 miles driven when the low fuel light went on, and I filled up at 453. Only put 25gal in!
I really want 20MPG on this next tank!

20 should be pretty easy to get, just get her out on the highway and stay under 70mph. Get a big exhaust and intake and you'll break that 20 pretty easily!
I get 14.5 on highway trips....grossing 18k lbs.

Congrats! If you dont horse around on the go peddle, youll get to 20. I just got back from Kansas for a pheasant hunt in my 98 12V, 700 mile round trip, filled up at 469 miles put in 24 gal, 19.5 mpg!!!!! I even found some good ole regular Low Sulfur Diesel! Its hard to find here, but the Flying J was on my way to and from Kansas. Had cruise control on, both windows down and maintained a fairly steady 65mph. I imagine it would go up a bit with the windows up.

little cargo, no mods, all highway, and keep it around 60 mph.
well its more like 290 mil divide by 11 gal = mpg
o and no lift/stock sized tires
about 1800-1900 rpm on cruise control, i have to try but its real #s.

I used to get 26 mpg also keeping my foot out of her and staying around 60 mph on the highway. I think I am getting more around 20 now

I just made a 1200 mile trip to California and back towing about 2500# on the way down and about 8000# on the way back - got 18.3 mpg down and 15.3 on the way back...
My key was driving at or just below the speed limit the whole way. It made the trip about an hour longer each way -- but I figured I saved $60 going slower - $30 an hour -- not bad.

Air drag goes up with the square of the velocity, sooooo........70mph has almost twice as much air drag as 50mph. The most efficient rpm for a 12 valver occurs at the peak torque rpm which is about 1600 rpm coinciding with something around 55mph. Unfortunately for me, I put a pretty high value on my time so I drive faster fwiw
