Personally not a fan.. But I have heard mixed reviews on what kind of damage it does to the rack linkage once it hits the stop at the end of the pump rack. Some say the impact causes damage to the lever arm and governor arms, others say its hog wash... Now this is of course if the AFC has also been gutted. if not the AFC acts as your plate anyway.
I would run at #0 plate at a minimum if it were me.. FWIW.

Well sorta.. The AFC only has so much travel at full boost pressure. I had to mod/grind my AFC to travel far enough forward to fully use my #10 at Full forward otherwise it keeps you off the plate near the furthest travel of the rack.
Problem with no AFC is way too much fuel at 0 boost. It bogs the engine out and most guys fell its less power when really you just have too much fuel..

i have ran plateless, stock slid, cut plate and slid, and cut plate in stock position. plateless allows u to gain the most fuel in the rack, but heat is a major factor along with trani problems if u have an automatic. i haul with my truck constanly so i took my stock plate, cut it, and slid it forward and have had no problems but gettin a little hot goin over steep grades with a trailer. the easiest thing to do would be go plateless but i would consider cuttin it flat first and then slidin if u want that little extra fuel and smoke.

I am running plateless and i dont like it. Mileage has gone into the toilet. I ground my plate to a #100 and am going to put it back in. I cant emphasize how bad mileage has got. It was bad to begin with now it is cut in half.

Running plateless wont damage the pump...however it will draw alot of unwanted attention on the street. We have 12v's to mod and hotrod...would suck to lose them. You will get great enjoyment from a well tuned pump, just remember people are watching!

Running without my plate for a couple days pretty much made my truck smoke like crazy, not much else. The pyro would wrap around and be pegged just trying to get onto a highway. I don't think it had any more power at all, and I know for a fact that it took a little longer to spool. I have since thrown the 100 plate back in, almost full forward.

I just sold my 98 12 valve but for the past 2.5 years I had ran it plateless. It definately smoked like crazy but there was a large power increase. I also had 85 hp injectors and a huge bell turbo w/ 4 inch downpipe. it was fun but I couldnt tow anything unless it was flat. I had a 32' toy hauler and had to put the plate back in every time I took it anywhere. So if you dont tow, have fun just watch out for the cops. they were quick to throw out excessive smoke tickets once the diesel frenzy hit our town some time ago...

thanks for all yalls replys guys..i am now running plateless since i tow nothing and a lil low on funds...i do have an auto which is a bad thing , but i pretty much stay off of it and if i want to throw smoke ill just floor it a lil and let off to let the smoke out before any power moves anything( QUESTION) if i hold it down for maybe more than a second i will feel the power and torque actually kick in..am i saving it a lil by just puffin the smoke and letting off before the truck moves..or is the torque still destroying the tranny even though the truck dont move anywhere..i hope yall understand me its not like tranny slippage just openin up wot to puff and let off b4 torque kicks in???..or do it with the trans in N..it also made the sound a lot better too

I would like to say thank you for that comment as that is some of the best advice I have seen here on this or any of the diesel boards in a while.I do not think that when some guys,or gals for that matter, buy a 12v they even consider what a well tuned pump can do for them. All they think about is swapping out the delivery valves and cutting their own plate so they can throw some smoke. They gain little or no extra power, but sure do use up alot more of their wallets in fuel wasted for nothing.
And as for the cutting their own plates,I often wonder what they feel they can gain over what those who designed the aftermarket fuel plate already did. While I do understand that each and everyones wallet is different once you have a pump that has been done by a reputable pump shop you will think to yourself I should have done this sooner......Andy
