12v Auto tranny

12v Auto tranny
I was wondering how much hp can the stock tranny handle, and after upgrades such as a fuel plate, GSK, what parts of the tranny should be upgraded first, and what needs to be upgraded?

oops I read your sig not your title, The stock auto cant hold much more than stock but a good torque converter and valvebody would be the first things I would do assuming the stock trans was still good.

Some owners have had long life from their auto with stock engine. Apparently they don't lug the engine and recognize the mismatched auto which needs a higher RPM. But even a stock engine can tear apart the stock auto if you are not careful. An upgraded engine, unless driven very carefully, will be more likely to slip the stock auto. So, to answer your first question, the stock tranny can handle stock horsepower, sometimes. I won't address your second question, but if you do a search you will find several days worth of reading which attempts to answer it. Remember that your rebuild should be matched to the horsepower you are making, and that good parts thrown together do not always result in a good transmission.

my stock tranny started to slip once i put the o plate and 4gsk kit in. but i do have to say it never blew up i drove on it for 1 year before i replaced it. but it did a better than the 1st aftermarket one i put in if you could even call it that. but now i have a dtt and i love it.

the stock tranny is only good for 450ft lbs or something close to that and your way over it. well the first thing you should buy is a nice valvebody and then a torque converter, and then a billet input shaft, billet output shaft, billet shift drums, billet flex plate. baisically all of it. but it depends on how you drive your truck too. i have my stock fuel plate slid forward and thats it, and i did a torque converter lock up switch and after sliding the plate full forward i can slip my stock converter, and towing anything that weighs over 1500lbs my tranny will slipp so bad i can't over 25mph unless im on flat ground. so i never tow with my truck cause i can't,and i don't lock much and try to accelerate quick cause it just slips and makes it worse and right now i don't have the money to buy a nice tripple disc converter, so i drive my truck pretty easy. but the whole tranny needs to be upgraded all of it.

My 2500 was used for towing a 5th wheel trailer by an older couple who sold it to us at about 75k miles.
It still has stock everything engine and drivetrain wise.
The stock auto is holding up fine.
My 3500 had the automatic go out shortly after I bought it from the dealer, I think it would have been OK, but there is a LONG story that goes with it *cough* mechanic. Anyway, I got it rebuilt and had a Goerend VB and single disk TC put in there (low stall one) by Mcmopar. It's great now.
I think the bottom line is that the stock automatic will not handle above-stock power for very long.

i put a #6 plate in and it slipped the stock converter pretty bad without towing so about 2 months later i did a transgo shift kit, upped the line and shift pressure and a billet converter. lets just say no problems with the tranny handling the engine.... for now. hahaha
