Choosing
The Right Clutch For The Right Application
It is very important to understand how performance clutches work.
Buying the most expensive, highest horse power clutch does not mean it
will offer longevity in return. What we have found is that by putting
a 550 hp clutch in a 350 hp vehicle will only deteriorate the driving
ability of the vehicle. It is necessary to understand that the vehicle
needs to be able to drive through the clutch matching the torque
capability of the clutch to the torque given to the clutch, thus
giving a drivable clutch. Cause and effect = chatter.
In deciding what clutch you are going to use (manufacturer and torque
capability) it is important to be clear to your vender what
modifications you have done to your vehicle and an approximate horse
power and torque reading. This will help the vender to decide what
clutch will best suit your needs. Also, it is very important to be
specific on what you use your vehicle for. If it is heavy hauling, be
clear on that. Provide, as close as possible, the overall GVW,
including what you are towing. Another thing that is important is
where, geographically, you live. Flat plains areas may not need the
type of clutch that the mountainous areas need.
If the vender that you are speaking to is vague about his clutch
capabilities, or does not understand the information that you are
giving him, you would be best suited to look for another vender.
The most important thing to remember when purchasing a clutch is there
is never a dumb question. There are only dumb answers. Be specific and
be honest. Trying to save money by using a clutch that is not capable
of doing what you need it to do will only cost you money in the long
run.
