Right up on building my homemade auxiliary tank with pics!!
Main reason for building this tank is I will be taking a trip to Breckenridge Colorado round trip it is about 2160 miles at I hope 17 mpg that's 127 gallons so 18" x 50.5" x 24" = 22248 div by 231 = approx 94.44 gallons + 34 oem tank that's a total of 128.44 gallons.
So I started working on it today got the material cut from one carbon steel hotroll sheet 10ga 60" x 120"
4pcs 18" x 24" 2 bffles & 2 ends
2pcs 18" x 50.5" front & back
2pcs 24" x 50.5" top and bottom

Got a little more done all the sides are on except the top.
I will have it welded inside and out except the top witch will have little pressure on it so I'm not to worried about leaks.
I put some holes in the baffles to take a little bit of weight out I know it's not much but it couldn't hurt.
Welded in some 3/4" tubing for support on the top because I'm sure I'm going to be setting stuff on top.

Yeah That would be cool if you had the fill cap inside the tool box that away it would just look like a tool box.
I also thought about making two tanks that would saddle the finder wheels inside the bed. It would been a lot of work but would be a nice set up to keep the bed space clear.

It looks good. I got mine north of Dallas from American Tank. Took him about 1/2 day to put it in. It has worked well and has its own fuel pump mounted inside. It also has a two lid toolbox built into it. It says it's a 90 gallon model, but I can put 100 gallons in it. It was pricey though. You'll save a LOT of money doing it yourself.
Are you mounting a fuel pump in it or setting it up on gravity feed?

Oh yeah one more great reason for this project.
I'm getting free fuel from friend
My friend's uncle owns a barge repair company who sometimes gets a barge with a couple 1,000 gallons of diesel in it they use to pay somebody to hall it off. Now like a smart man my friend takes what he can and stores it a his shop.
Lucky me!!!

Thats exactly what I have. I cut the bottom of the tool box out and slid it over the tank. The filler is inside the tool box. I hooked the drain into the filler neck of the oe tank. I will see if I can get some pics for you.

It has its own fuel line and plumbs right in to the supply line out of the OE tank. There is a switch by the steering wheel to activate the diverter valve. My fuel gauge picks up either tank, depending on which one I use. The aux tank has its own sending unit. Almost 90% of the time I just run off the auxiliary tank. Mine is aluminum.

Finished welding the tank today and pressure tested it with 4psi with no leaks!!
Will sand it down tomorrow and do a pre install in the truck then take it back out to get it sprayed with bed liner.
Here are a couple pics of my welds not that good of pics taken with my iPhone.

I have a 50 gal. aluminum aux tank in the bed of the truck. It is gravity fed through a 2mic fuel filter w/s into the oe vent line on the oe tank. This vent line is available because I have done the tank vent mod. The filter/ws is a racor 120as. This way keeps the fuel gauge full until the aux tank is empty. Then you still have the 36 gals. in the oem tank. I've run it this way for about 2yrs. with no problems. Hope this helps. Nice lookin welds by the way.
