bad pinion bearing?
Hello, this is my first post but I have been reading here for a while, good forum board. I have an 03 4-door 1-ton dually with cummins HO and 3:73 rear, well its got 20K on it and has been getting louder for about 5K now from the rear end, at about 65-70 mph medium throttle it whines, but when you let off it quits, I told my dealer about it today and he didnt even look at it, he told me it was the pinion bearing and to bring it in next wed, I told him I never really pull anything heavy execpt a 5x10 bike trailer around the southeast racing dirtbikes, he acted like this was common, should I be on the lookout for foul smelling stuff he might be trying to shovel my way?
Thanks, Billy
Thanks, Billy

at 20 k it is under warranty right? I would think that howl on accel and not on coast is more of a pinion/crown problem. Unless the pinion brgs are loose. Unless this dealer has tried to jam you before let them do their job.

Thanks, I checked the diff levels at 10K because of this forum and sure enough it was low ( 2 quarts ). they said it wouldnt hurt anything but now Im back at 20K and the problem seems to be the bearing which would not have gotten the proper amount of lube if the level was low. I will let them work and see what happens, i guess Im just on the lookout to not get screwed. thanks again

Hi all Seems were not the only ones with the 3.73 11.5 rear ends with probs.... I just had my 15000 mile service done today. actual miles were 14888 on the clock. well other than the most annoying noise from the rear end of this thing this truck is a dream. its awesome but im really ****** about the rear end noise it started at about 1200 miles and really has gotten worse SO when the tech at my local jiffy lube took the magplug out of the rear diff it was coverd in shavings and the oil ORIGINAL oil mind you was BLACK even smells burnt. wife says it looks charcoal grey with a silvery tint to it thats the metal in it. the tech stopped and gave me a paper coffe cup with the oil sampl and then whiped the plug of on a paper towel. he said take this to your dealer. I took one look at it and I was HOT there were no svc departments open as its sunday here, But tomorrow Im going on a ramping bi@#hing party with them. I told one dealer already that there was a noise from the rear but they said." we drove it and can find no noise or any abnormality. your probly hearing the resonance from the exhaust" can you belive that load!! Ill post tomorrow what i find Im getting a new rear or there buying this thing back not paying 40,000 for crap like this.at only 15,000 miles.
