P1740 TCC O/D solenoid performance

Truck decided to throw a P1740 code about a week and a half ago. I reset it and went on my way figuring if it was something it would come back. Well, yesterday it came back. According to the service manual there are several possible causes including a faulty solenoid. Im wondering if anyone else has had this code and if it was this simple?

It has been acting a little fun lately, however. I drive in tow/haul nearly all the time and it seems to slip out of lockup in 3rd every once in a while. If i cycle the tow/hall switch it will go back to lock-up.

Please tell me its not the overdrive clutch or the torque converter. I Just had the front band and drum replaced along with an upgraded VB and a shift kit.

Any ideas?

Wow. I cant believe no one has seen this code, or knows nothing about it.

When my old 2001 2500 threw this code, it was a full trans rebuild, covered under the powertrain warranty.

They replaced a lot of parts, $1700 in total, plus labor.

Normally that code will set if the computer doesn't see enough of an RPM drop when the torque converter locks up or when it goes into OD. Unfortunately you will have to have someone run some pressure tests to determine more then that.

D45 -
I dont have a powertrain warranty. I just some work done to it. I hope it isnt a rebuild considering it was just all apart.

Paulb - What will the pressure tests tell? Whether it is the solenoid or an actual problem?

Yes, and they usually will tell which part is the problem.

Not with that code it won't. That is a catch all for multiple different things that could be wrong, and it will intermit constantly with electrical glitches.

It has for me in the past. On both my 02 and my 05.

I had that code, replaced the soleinoid and it turned out to be the connector on the solenoid....double check the connector first as it is way cheaper than buying a new solenoid!!

Also, I've heard of some guys getting these codes with really tight coverters and/or built tranny's...something about the RPM drop..

I've had P1740 since day 1 of a DTT tranny build. DTT and their stellar Phoenix builder basically said it's no big deal and not to worry about it. 3-1/2 years later and it still hasn't been an issue.

I was getting this code pretty frequently after doing some tranny work with a new converter. I was told before installing the converter that this code was likely to appear and it did. I would just clear it with the Smarty Jr. Since setting the Jr. to SW#3 I haven't had the code come back!? Anyone know why?
